You've got a good voice." thanks :) most of the other songs i've written have more vocals from beginning to end, but i tried going on an instrumental tangent and building up into a sort of post-rock-ish climax for this one. my song lyrics are all taken from poetry i've written, and the one i used for this song was a pretty short poem. i feel like it says everything i needed to say with this song though.

paxman 08.26.12	I quite enjoyed this a lot, sir. Good job and all that. However, the crescendo wasn't much of a crescendo. I think if you had added some distortion to the guitar tracks and turned the drum track up it would have turned out so much better.

auberginedreams 08.26.12	@paxman thanks. i agree about the crescendo, i'll take your advice for the final version that will appear on the actual EP. i was having some problems with the drums clipping and so i had to turn them down a lower than i would have liked toward the end, but i should have it worked out by then.

auberginedreams 08.26.12	i'll check it out for sure bluew. @weeping i just listened to your music, good stuff. i was actually initially going to go in a heavier direction kind of like that but as i started writing stuff it eventually got more influenced by indie rock and more mellow stuff. i still tried to keep some aggression in here though.

auberginedreams 08.26.12	"it's fine as it is aub, but maybe a tad more low end?" yeah there's actually no bass on here at all yet so that's probably why it's missing low end haha. it'll have bass in the official EP version though. and i just listened to your track, i actually like it a lot. i think we probably have similar music taste. the production was really good too. i recorded this track myself on my laptop and i'm new to the whole thing so the production is kind of serviceable at best.
BlueW 08.26.12	nah man, emo was meant to be produced like this any more hifi and it would ruin it, that being said you might wanna invest in some decent gear like a sound card and stuff.
auberginedreams 08.26.12	thanks darth. i didn't really expect you to like this tbh. yeah bluew some better gear would help, i've already spent a lot on gear though lately (new guitar, etc.) so it might have to wait a little while. i'm starting to realize that this is an expensive hobby. i just used an audio interface that i plug into my laptop, and that alone was like $200. i'm not sure where to go from there though, do you have any suggestions on stuff i should look into getting?
BlueW 08.26.12	a 200$ interface should be good enough, I personally only use that in conjunction with a 4 channel mixer
auberginedreams 08.26.12	yeah i paid a good amount for the interface because i figured it'd be cheaper in the end than buying a shitty one and upgrading later. a mixer would be nice though. this is gonna sound dumb but bare with me, what is the difference between using a physical mixer and the mixer on the recording program on my laptop?
BlueW 08.26.12	I can eq stuff prior to it's digital state also make sure i don't get peaks, you can do it in your DAW but for some reason I like to get that proper tone first before digitally "annihilating" it :P
auberginedreams 08.26.12	yeah that sounds like a good idea, it's hard to get a good tone (especially distorted tones) with the DAW alone.

auberginedreams 08.27.12	thanks for listening everyone. hopefully it won't take too long to record the other songs, i'm just about done with the writing process. @scoot wow thanks man. i'm doing the best i can with the drum programming, but there are a few spots that i agree need some work. i'll rework the drum track a bit for the final version. ideally i'd like to get a real drummer at some point because it would sound a lot better for this type of music and because i'm not that great at coming up with drum parts. writing the drum part for this song took like twice as long as the guitar and vocals combined lol. also i think you're right that that riff would make a cool beat. you can go ahead and sample it or remix it or whatever, as long as you give me credit for the sample.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	thanks wacknizzle, that really means a lot. i have two other songs written, i just need to record them and then i'll release a 3 song demo/ep thing. after that i'll start working on an album or at least a longer ep, but before that i'd like to find some more band members because it'd be tough for me to put together a whole full-length album with just one member. plus i'd like to be able to play these songs live, which is impossible right now unless i used like 4 backing tracks or something lol.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	@wacknizzle yeah me too. i mean i'll still keep on making music regardless, but it would make it a lot better and less stressful if i wasn't doing everything on my own. some music can be done well solo like acoustic stuff and electronic production and things like that, but this type of music was sort of meant to be made by a band. i'm glad that people still like it though despite it just being one guy. @aids thanks, i'm glad you like it. i can see what you're getting at with my vocals sounding like la dispute, they're obviously a strong influence on me. but i wasn't really trying to copy him or anything, i'm just going for a similar vocal style. my vocals here are pretty close to my normal speaking voice except for the fact that i'm shouting and i'm trying to sound really emotional and dramatic lol.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	@wacknizzle yeah it's not that hard to get a hang of drum programming, at least as far as working the program. the hard part is coming up with good drum parts when you don't have experience playing drums. i've improved from when i first started but it could still be a lot better. @scoot alright sounds cool man.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	yeah i recorded the guitar and vocal tracks through an interface plugged into my laptop using the same program. and i programmed the drums with it too.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	yeah usually i just start screaming and then end up doing that thing were it sounds like i'm running out of breath and i go into a speaking voice that varies a little bit in pitch to give it a bit of melody, and just go back and forth like that. that way it's kind of somewhere in the middle of clean and harsh vocals. i don't know if that makes sense but that's kind of what i did for this song. sometimes i go heavier if it matches the music, but this song is on the softer side.

auberginedreams 08.28.12	yeah it's all me. i programmed the drums on my laptop, i tried to do the best i could but i don't actually have any experience playing actual physical drums so it was kind of tough. i'm gonna tweak some parts and try and make it sound a bit more human. i would like to find a live drummer at some point but for now i'm gonna have to make do with programming the drums myself. and yeah i'm a lot more knowledgeable about this kind of music that about electronic music haha.
auberginedreams 08.28.12	oh and thanks for listening. to be more specific i used a drum sequencer where you input the drum hits on a grid, then select the volume, velocity, and all that stuff for each hit. i'm not sure if that's what you meant by drum mapping. it's super tedious, took me at least a couple hours and i'm still finding things i need to fix.

auberginedreams 09.20.12	update: i have a new song recorded, well everything except for the vocals that is. and i have a couple others that are partially recorded. one song i'm working on is in FACGCE tuning (the american football tuning) although i'm not sure whether it will appear on this ep or not, it may have to wait until the next one. but yeah i just felt like updating this. i'll put the new song up on my soundcloud page once it has vocals. i think my production and drum programming has improved from the last song, hopefully it's not just me. the drums sound a bit more natural.
