Culpa At Way Out West 2012

Continuing on Aids list of Scandinavian music festival here a recount of rthe stuff I saw (Full sets) during my time at WoW.rFirst time visiting WoW even though it's in the city I live in and is also rprobably the best music festival in all of Sweden. The festival resides in rSlottsskogen, a public park here in Gothenburg and makes for a nice renvironment to be in, despite a tad small for the 27,000 festival goers.
1Florence and the machine
Ceremonials

The band sounded great and Florence Welch voice really works in a big festival setting and she was spot on. It was more
jarring to hear her calm speaking voice with which she urged to crowd to hug each other or wish the bass player a healthy
child he and his wife were at the moment expecting.
The crowd's mood was also great and made the whole thing a lot of fun and was on of the best shows I saw during the whole
festival.

Amount of fun: A lot
2The Black Keys
El Camino

Due to me wanting to see another band later on I decided to hang back and leave early which did deter from the overall
experience. But they did sound great and the songs I saw were great even though I think they would sound better in a
smaller in doors venue. I do hope I get to a chance to see them again live someday.
Unfortunately missed Lonely Boy but Little black submarines and Girl is on my mind were awesome.
Amount of people clapping before the song Little Black Submarines was over: Quite a bit
3Purity Ring
Shrines

I left the black keys early to catch purity ring which I do not regret, but I would have needed to go even earlier to get a
good seat. The show was at a Church not far from the park and I was really looking forward to this set much cause of the
location. Unfortunately a lot of people were already there when I came and I got the feeling most of them got there early to
watch the band after Purity Ring, Mazzy Star. And therefor not many were all that into the band and from my seat I had
trouble seeing the band.
What I did see looked and sounded fantastic, the light show worked well in the church and Corin Roddick's paper-lantern-
drums-that-illuminates- and-makes-a-sound-on-his-keyboard-when-he-hit's-them were cool and so was Megan James big
paper drum that did what the lanterns did as well. And I should know it looked cool cause when there were about 4 songs left
Megan asked if people could get in front of the stage and I was more than happy to oblige. I went
from;http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/440/wow1013.jpg/
to;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=296TCdnTpJc (Even a bit closer than that, also not my recording).
Amount of people not as into the band as I: Felt like almost everyone (until I got close to the stage where this one dude was
really into them and another just gone somewhere else in his mind dancing to his own songs)
4St. Vincent
Strange Mercy

What a fantastic set. I had listened some to her latest album Strange Mercy but man did it click with me after seeing her live.
Annie's stage presence is great and a joy to watch and her band sounded great. Northern Light's was a highlight (She killed it
on the theremin) .
Amount of stage diving: Some by Annie Clark herself during closer ?Krododil?.
5 First Aid Kit
The Lion's Roar

These Swedish sister drew a big crowd and played a great set. Can't complain much, it was very enjoyable. A fun thing they
did do was play Fleet Foxes Tiger Mountain Peasant Song which they covered 4 years ago and put on youtube which is a big
reasons why they are where they are today.
Amount of people trying to get off their rain jacket after just a drizzle of rain but couldn't since the zipper was stuck which
made them really warm: Just me.
6Bon Iver
For Emma, Forever Ago

The set I had looked forward to the most that day and it did not disappoint. The whole ten maned band that makes up Bon
Iver current live shows displayed some amazing musicianship and didn't make the songs overbearing or to cluttered with
instruments. They did a rework of the song Blood Bank which was a really treat to see live with the whole band. But despite
the whole crew being there it was still the For Emma, Forever Ago songs that hit the hardest and had the most people sing
along. Closer ?The Wolves (Act I and II)? was really something else. I had ?What might have been lost? stuck long after the
show was over. And so did the crowd cause when the band finally left the stage us in the crowd started singing ?What might
have been lost? and slowly rocking from left to right, it was quite the cosy moment. The sun also set during the set which
only hit me afterward.
Watch The Wolves (Act I and II): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5H5mtn4KC3Q&feature=related%20.
Although the bass downs out some of the sound and the crowd at the end, which is unfortunate.)
Amount of people with signs praising Justin or Bon Iver: Two
7Asap Rocky
Live.Love.A$AP.

This is probably tied with Florence as the most fun show during the festival. Asap's first time in Sweden and people were
pumped (Also my first hip-hop show. Which also included another first for me, the smell of weed *). With only a couple
douchebags trying to get in front of me and everyone else the crowd was great. It was also pretty funny to see this 13 year
old with his dad right next to me digging the show, even the dad had his arm bobbing up and down.
*Which isn't so surprising considering the artist. And note but weed isn't as common in Sweden as America cause of stricter
laws and it's not as acceptable to smoke it in public.
Watch Peso: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNJwXkSL6r8
Amount of times I smelled weed: Twice
8The Field
Looping State of Mind

Swedish minimal techno act put on a surprisingly engaging set despite their genre, most thanks to a fantastic drummer who
made the show more than just bleeps and bloops.
Amount of people dancing weirdly by them selves: Several.
9Mogwai
Young Team

I like post-rock. Mogwai play post-rock but I haven't listened all that much to them and I'm not sure that gonna change after
hearing them live. Despite this it was nice to see some post-rock and Mogwai know what they're doing so I still had a good
time.
Amount of sound walls: Several.
10 Stuff I saw from afar or just some of or missed
Album

Saw some: Refused, Fiest, Billy Bragg, Wilco, Common, Laleh, Madeon (It's kinda neat seeing a skinny 18 year old make a whole audience go crazy).
Missed: TNGHT, Cloud Nothings, Ben Howard, Araab Muzik (A set which Asap rocky visited), and a couple of other I cant
remember.
