Top 10 Albums For Synesthetes
The title speaks for the description. Please comment if you have any suggestions to add! |
1 | | Battles Mirrored
There's a lot of colors and shapes in this one. Highs and lows, the entire piece never stays static for long. Lots of theory, lots of art. Absolutely amazing. You can definitely hear the math involved, the balance between instruments. This album pushes new limits. Breath-taking. |
2 | | Radiohead Kid A
This one feels like sedation. A nice album to sleep too. Dynamics from soft to chaotic carefully placed, the album paints a brilliant landscape masterpiece in your head. |
3 | | Nine Inch Nails Ghosts I-IV
I was turned on to this album quickly after a listening to the first few songs. Each "ghost" is like a little world. They can be hypnotic and repepitive, but each one is different then the one before. Very cool. |
4 | | Tool 10,000 Days
Guitarist Adam Jones custom built a "pipe-bomb" microphone, a brass cylinder with a pickup inside. The guitars on this album have the most wicked tone that I can only described as charged and solarized. Also, the mathy time-signature changes give interesting shapes to their songs that you don't see with everyday metal, pop, or whatever music. Very bright, innovative album, a must-hear. |
5 | | Pink Floyd Wish You Were Here
With songs like "Welcome to the Machine" and "Crazy Diamond VI-IX", this album easily gets a 5. With a clear difference in mood from songs like "Crazy Diamond" to "Have a Cigar", this album demonstrates great dynamics with textured effects and psychadelic riffs and lyrics. An awesome album. |
6 | | The Mars Volta De-loused in the Comatorium
This album is powerful, turbulent, and FAST. Full of psychotic guitars, innovative drums, high strung vocals and a million soundscape-y samples of whatever. Psychadelic lyrics describe things in whole new ways. Very innovative, very sound driven. Technical and mathy. I could go on. A definitive 6. |
7 | | Beck Sea Change
A very calm album with a clean sound. "Sea Change" combines watery and ethereal sounds with poetic lyrics. A peaceful album, lots of emotion. A great sleepy-time record for synesthetes. |
8 | | Fantomas Suspended Animation
Fantomas is a whole new kind of music. "Suspended Animation" is full of video game samples and japanese toy sounds. Noisy and chaotic at times, it is a mental breakdown described in sound format. |
9 | | Man Man Life Fantastic
As a synesthete, I tend to listen to cleaner music. Electronic music has comfortably settled into a place in my heart. Man Man aren't electronically oriented, so to speak, but their fantastically wide library of instruments include plenty of ordinary household items, which gives the listener more things to explore as well as a kick-ass stage perfomance (so I hear). A definite 9 on this list. |
10 | | Modest Mouse We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Usually I'm turned off by messy music covered with background fuzz, but this album has an amazing dynamic between that and a technical, clean sound. A very pleasant listen, I give a 10. |
