08.07.12 | Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Wilco kind of has a similar story with piracy that Kid A does. Also just go to the frontpage of bandcamp, you'll find some info there on popular/semi-popular that use the site, the biggest one should stick out to you.
But when you say popular do you mean in actual terms of popularity or as in popular music, the tradition, as a whole? Because if it's the latter, all of the artists on bandcamp. |

08.07.12 | if you put 4 on your assignment you'll lose all credibility if your teacher knows music lol but hell, NIN released a free CD either soon before or soon after the Social network came out, angels and airwaves is the other pretty popular band i can think of that released a free CD online |

08.07.12 | If you're doing a report about music globalization you should talk about artists that got big worldwide without singing in english cuz that's really rad like Rammstein and Dir En Grey |

08.07.12 | I'll look into the one about Wilco, thanks a lot. And I mean in terms of popularity, non pop music. And I think I remember reading something about NIN and different ways of distributing music. I'll definitely mention something about non-English music's popularity in English speaking countries!

08.07.12 | Is it specifically about artists that have used the internet in a special way or more generally about how the internet helps musicians?
Just some ideas that came to my mind regarding the latter:
* K-Pop and Starcraft 2 Streams
* Songs on OSTs (Shutter Island introduced me to John Cage for example)
* Songs in video games (-> FIFA games, NBA2k12 etc.)
* Youtube Channels (UKF for example played quite the role in getting their respective styles known here)
* Youtube in general
* iTunes etc.
* sputnik, pitchfork etc.
