To me, lyrics are a very important aspect of music rrin an emotional sense, rfollowing their style of rrdelivery. It is a shame that a good chunk of rrpeople rdisregard lyrics, but I can understand rrtheir position as there are times when my rfocus rris totally away from the words being said and rrentirely on the sounds rpresented. Even more rroffensive is when the band itself has a disregard rrfor good rlyrics...excellent music can overshadow rrpoor lyrics but the knowledge of all the rstupid rrshit the singer is saying will inevitably rcontinue rto irk me.
1The Magnetic Fields

Stephin Merritt: This guy has an unbelievable knack for dry wit and irony that
it
seems almost too effortless for him. His lyrics range from humourously
bitter/cynical
to straight-up sincere at those rare moments...all the time making me both
smile
and get misty eyed at almost simultaneous intervals. And his lyrics are also
very
self-aware...they parody the clich?s that they dwell on yet also use them to
drive
the point home.

Matt Berninger: His way with words are unmatched, and his metaphors are odd yet
still very human and normal. Every phrase is heartfelt and perfectly imperfect.
He
speaks for every adult who has ever had some low point in their life.
3Leonard Cohen

John Darnielle: I don't have much indepth things to say about him since TMG are
merely a recent obsession, but wow. That is all. I love how John Darnielle sounds
like he sings his heart out about every damn single thing that keeps him up at
night.
5Swans

Michael Gira: He isn't a natural poet, but he is virulently honest and his
wordings are
pleasingly eerie and off-putting when he is not being 100% honest to the point
of
"invincibility". For him, it's always been the aesthetic and feeling (regarding
both
delivery and words) rather than poetic prowess. Delightfully crude.
6The Smiths

Morrissey: He may turn absolutely normal arguments into batshit crazy opinions
and
totally come off as a pretentious dickbag in the process, but he has always had
a way
with the lovelorn soul. When he connects, he hits hard.
7Interpol

Paul Banks: Say as you might about their post debut material, but Paul Banks'
lyrics
have only improved. Regardless of the reference of time, I have always adored
his
awkward metaphors about relationships and phrasings that don't always sit right.
It's
part of the charm, and it goes well with his vocal tonality and delivery.
