| Favorite Bassists
Disclaimer, favorite bassists, not best. I don't own anything by Les Claypool, so i can't judge. Don't bitch about it. | | 1 | Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers
A modern marvel at the instrument, i fell in love with him after i listened to Californication all the way through, and fell in love with the man again when i heard him play on De-Loused in the Comatorium. | | 2 | Steve Harris of Iron Maiden
A metal god in terms of the bass guitar. There a so very few bands that have as clear and finely sounding basslines on their music as Iron Maiden. Not only that, but Steve Harris is absolutely brilliant, composing much of Maiden's lyrics and riffs. Up the Irons baby. | | 3 | John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin
Oh so very much has been written about this man. He is probably the most talented musicians in the realm of the bass guitar. From being the string composer of Kashmir, to the synthesizers of In Through the Out Door, to the keyboards on the legendary Stairway to Heaven. But enough about that, listen to The Lemon Song, his bass skills squeeze me lemon pretty damn well. | | 4 | Cliff Burton of Metallica
A truly great bassists, and his solos on Cliff 'Em All really show one how he took the bass to the next level. Personally, i would have preferred to hear him more in Master of Puppets, but damn that solo in Orion is good...damn good. God speed man, as you look down on modern music. I wish you were still here, because Metallica would still be Gods. | | 5 | Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead
When it comes to Bassists, you CANNOT be cooler than this man. Even though his raspy voice may take a few listens to get used to, the man is a legend in terms of metal. Motorhead make me bang my head anyday, and this man continues to rock hard 30 years later. I wish i could grown a beard like you dude. | | 6 | Paul McCartney of The Beatles
Maybe not the greatest bassist to ever walk the world, but hell, he got the job done well fronting the most famous band ever. He was brilliant musically, and his simple and catchy lines take a quick liking to one's ears. | | 7 | Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath
The original metal bassist deserves to be on any bassist list. His influence in Black Sabbath is more deserving of praise than he receives. I listened to Paranoid recently and even though he cant match the volume of Iommi's guitar, he can sure as hell play just as well. | | 8 | Paul Hinojos of At the Drive-In, Sparta, The Mars Volta
This one is the least know by the general community, but he still holds a certain place in my heart. Starting with the brilliant At the Drive-In, he absolutely grabbed hold of me in Relationship of Command. Then he went on to form Sparta, and then joined my favorite contemporary Prog band, The Mars Volta. Boy do i love TMV. He just maid them that much better though. | | 9 | John Myung of Dream Theater
Even though the Dream Theater bassist has such quick fingers and great skills, he is often clouded by Petrucci's Guitar wailing in fury. However, few men can play a bass onside a the guitar of Petrucci, few men can play as quickly as Myung, and dammit so few men can play as long as he can. Total respect. | | 10 | Chris Wolstenholme of Muse
Starlight is by no means a hard bass-line, but his lines in Origin of Symmetry, and his willingness to distort and change the sound of the bass is quite deserving in my eyes. He may hold a backseat to Bellamy at times, but Muse wouldnt be the international superstars they are without Chris. | |

10.07.07 | I know i know. I just cant judge without owning any primus. I feel ashamed. | epizoan
10.07.07 | Surely John Entwistle of The Who bests Paul McCartney. | Bfhurricane
10.07.07 | 1, 2, 4, and 9 are sick. JPJ, Geezer, McCartney and Wolstenholme are pretty talented too. | McP3000
