Masochist
05.17.12 | Lots of good songs her, absolutely, but some missing. Off the top of my head, I would add:
"Metropolis, pt. I: The Miracle and the Sleeper"
"Panic Attack"
"Sacrificed Sons"
"A Nightmare To Remember"
"A Rite of Passage"
...and "Octavarium" would be in the top 3 probably. |
KjSwantko
05.17.12 | glad to see it's almost entirely vintage DT which it should be, but damn the ranking is screwed up of these songs |
undertakerpt
05.17.12 | I think i've heard metropolis tooooo many times, which is why i'm sick of it! Still a good song though. The other songs you mentioned though, bored the pubes off me. Octavarium is a great tune, maybe i'll give it a spin and it'll bump its way up. Spread the word bro. |
KjSwantko
05.17.12 | The intro of Metropolis is sick but the song gets boring after IMO |
undertakerpt
05.17.12 | @KjSwantko, I lost hair trying to get this list arranged you swine! All the songs off Awake would be the start of the list, but I thought it would look stupid to the rest of you, so i mixed the list up a bit. Hard to please you bastards are sometimes |
KjSwantko
05.17.12 | lol word. But come on, you're saying songs like Home and Glass Prison (while they are good) are better than A Change Of Seasons. aCoS is without question the best piece of music they've written. |
KjSwantko
05.17.12 | I do appreciate the love for Mirror/Lie though; those were two of the songs that got me interested in DT back in the day |
Masochist
05.17.12 | Well...perhaps "A Rite of Passage" is a biased choice--it gets stuck in my head far more often than I care to admit, for reasons I still haven't figured out. But "Panic Attack" is definitely one of their best songs, and "A Nightmare To Remember" is one of the best songs on 'Black Clouds...' (it was hard for me to choose one song from that one).
If I were to make a mix album of DT songs (or mix double album) for someone who was interested in their sound, I'd probably include all those songs, except maybe "Sacrificed Sons," which really depends on the person. |

05.17.12 | Yazz good shit with Hell's Kitchen bro; not one you see mentioned often but a sweet song. |
undertakerpt
05.17.12 | @Masochist, Black clouds.... the only song there that struck a chord was "the count of tuscany" in fact, if it wasnt for the bonus disc full of covers, that album would suck huge winky in my book mate.
@KjSwantko, I do have tremendous love for ACOS, but the length of the track isn't great for a convenient listen if you know what i mean. Home, due to it's orgasm noises, makes it a "wank-a-long" which secures it a high spot. Glass prison is the song that got me into these guys many moons ago, so I guess it's the one to blame for a sore bell-end |
undertakerpt
05.17.12 | @Yazz flute, interesting list there buddy, I thought it would be easier to stick "6 degrees" as a whole song though seeing as it has multiple piles of win lol, I didn't put any songs off falling into infinity on my list unlike yours, due to the fact that my copy has been a replacement golf ball for quite some time now |
Yazz_Flute
05.17.12 | I much prefer Falling Into Infinity as album over Systematic Chaos, and probably Train of Thought and Octavarium. Doesn't deserve the hate it gets. |
undertakerpt
05.17.12 | hmmm, there was a point where I didn't hate the album, just didnt like it very much. But one day when I was wiping my ass with it, a shard snapped off and cut my ring, making it look like a collapsed mineshaft. Now I hate it. |
KjSwantko
05.17.12 | Systematic Chaos sucks ass, I think I 2'd it on here. The songs on that album aren't even horrible but I hate the dull, flat, boring sound of it |
ChuckyTruant
05.18.12 | Hmm nothing from the new one? |
ChuckyTruant
05.18.12 | I mean On the Backs of Angels is pretty fucking great |

05.18.12 | List is awesome, you can't go too far wrong with DT |

05.18.12 | @michaelsnoxall, they suck? really? i didnt notice that! please justify your opinion because i'd love to hear it! |
MO
05.18.12 | wow how is this missing Stream of Consciousness? it's pretty much the main reason to check out train of thought |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.18.12 | "they lack any idea of how to write music, how to be creative or how to present a sense of cohesion in their music."
Wrong. They do have a few songs that aren't exactly cohesive (The Ministry of Lost Souls), but they obviously know how to write music because of songs like Pull Me Under, As I Am and Forsaken. As for being creative...lol |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.18.12 | Also yeah, Steam of Consciousness is amazing |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.18.12 | *as for not being creative...lol
DT have always been creative. Admittedly, not so much recently, but in the past defo. I can understand that you don't like them and I'm cool with that, but your reasons are wrong |
JohnnyoftheWell
05.18.12 | Fair nuff, I guess if they hadn't gotten me into prog, I might be the same |
MO
05.18.12 | they were fun in grade 8 when you're just discovering new music, but the appeal doesn't last long |
ChuckyTruant
05.18.12 | why hate on Portnoy?
|
ChuckyTruant
05.18.12 | Ehh, he's pretty good. He's no Thomas Haake or Neil Peart but obviously damn good |
MO
05.18.12 | "It gets really annoying. I mean, he's okay, but he's not that good"
he's got some solid creativity, you can't deny that, but yea his fans are a bit over the top |
MO
05.18.12 | it doesn't help he only plays single strokes heh |
ChuckyTruant
05.18.12 | lol. Doesn't he use hand-percussion from time to time |

05.18.12 | Will watch when I get home |

05.19.12 | Yeah dream theater were the band that got me into prog as well, i guess that's why they'll always have a place in my heart. As for Portnoy's beats, I find them an enjoyable listen. |
OmairSh
10.09.12 | undertakerpt, it's coincidental, DT was the reason I got into prog as well :D. But I'm growing distant to them of late :(. So much talent being wasted on generic dt styled prog :(, they need to move out asap! I was hoping they'd do a 'heritage', something fresh, something jazzy, something more moody. |
undertakerpt
10.09.12 | @OmairSh, hey look at us lol. I've found admitting DT got me into prog results in people leaving my company quite rapidly in my experience, so be careful who you tell lol.
But yeah I know what you mean, what happened to the "feeling" that went into their songs? When Petrucci plays a solo you can just see where it's going straight away and gets quite tedious! |
OmairSh
10.10.12 | Haha yeah I haven't come across many DT lovers in the sputnick prog community, but I understand why. We love them because they have a sentimental value for us. But DT's become Metallic prog rather than prog metal recently. Too much metal nowadays and it seems kind of immature at times. They need more complex and intricate layering and interesting sonic values rather than just technical instrumental sections. Yeah I think petruccis been reading the youtube comments on his videos and with all the compliments on his technical ability and shredding he's striving to become the standard by which the rest are judged, just my opinion though :P. Their production values are also pretty average tbh, and the mix is usually horrid with JM and JR facing the brunt. Maybe it would be good for them to ask Steven Wilson to produce their next album :D. |
OmairSh
10.10.12 | Obviously everyone has their prefences, it's a good list, there aren't many "bad" DT songs out there, maybe average songs. Blind faith, the great debate, Learning to live, Trial of tears, Lines in the sand, hells kitchen, finally free, The root, Sacrificed sons, Breaking all illusions! To name a few :D |
undertakerpt
10.11.12 | Yeah your right about the Petrucci thing, seems like he's just playing to please everyone but himself. Personally I much prefer DT in their Kevin Moore days. The guy didn't seem to show off at all, but when he played he added a lot more atmosphere to their compositions.
Yeah DT were the fist sort of prog band I got into though. Their long songs opened my mind a lot more towards other bands who played long songs lol. |
OmairSh
10.11.12 | Likewise they 'opened my mind', yeah Kevin Moore era was the strongest, but I'm still a huge fan of JR. |

10.15.15 | Bump this list to see if it generates any controversy xD |
