Favorite Progressive Bands

The prog bands I dig the work of. Not in any kind of order, but my rdescriptions will note if a favorite among favorites.
1Dream Theater
Awake

Just getting these guys out of the way. Early Dream Theater was my real introduction to
progressive music of any kind, and I still hold their albums, all the way up to
Train of Thought, near and dear to me.
2Genesis
The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway

"If you think that it's pretentious, you've been taken for a ride". Amazing
lyrics, gorgeous synth tones, for that time or any other... Just really well
written stuff, too.
3Haken
Visions

Their music is fun. It just is. It's well written, compelling, and above all else,
there is a sense of energy and fun. It took me back to how early Dream
Theater felt for me, when you could really feel the life in them.
4Gentle Giant
Octopus

This band became one of my favorites almost immediately. This is a favorite
among favorites. They're a whole package, complex and technical, yet so
playful and good at songwriting that you couldn't be blamed if you didn't
notice. Some great lyrics, as well.
5Opeth
Still Life

They've always had a unique sound. Sure, you could trace influences back, this
sounds like that, this, that, blah blah, Dan Swano, blah blah, but it never quite
sounds all the way like anyone else but Opeth. Opeth is Opeth.
6Yes
Close to the Edge

I think you can hear a lot of modern bands in their sound, obviously influential.
The opening track of the album I picked alone is explanation enough for
enjoying them- even if they did hit hard levels of excess at points in their
career, and veered into sellout territory in the 80's.
7Unitopia
The Garden

I love this band for their ability to both write very beautiful pieces of music,
and very rockin' songs.
8Jethro Tull
Thick as a Brick

Amazing songwriting, good lyricist, the perfect mix of prog and folk. Growing
to be a favorite among favorites over time.
9Tool
Lateralus

Tool has always been controversial, some would argue vehemently that they
are prog, some that they aren't. All I know is, I consider them prog, if not
from the start, then later in their career. Similarly to Opeth, Tool is just Tool.
10Rush
Moving Pictures

This is a band I like quite a bit, would feel bad not putting on the list, but for
some reason, they don't click with me as well as one might expect. But they're
a great band, no doubt and influence on much music, including my own.
11Camel
The Snow Goose

Camel is a band I haven't listened to enough, but one I knew was exceptional
from the first listen of the first album I obtained by them.
12Porcupine Tree
Stupid Dream

A master of being both progressive, yet memorable and contemporary. Steven
Wilson generally does not let excess or wankery cloud his musical vision.
13King Crimson
Red

Holy balls, this band. Capable of gorgeous soundscapes, chill saxophone
passages... And yet... Also incredibly ugly, murky, lumbering riffs in odd time
signatures. There's a reason Tool has cited this band as a big inspiration.
14 Subsignal
Beautiful & Monstrous

I love this band. Their music really resonates with me. Soaring melodies,
beautiful harmonies, delicious riffs... At least, for the moment, a favorite
among favorites. This particular album tickles my innards.
15Frost*
Milliontown

This entire album is just a single, ridiculously long eargasm. No matter how
long the songs, or where they, sometimes seemingly randomly- at least at first
listen- seem to shift... Always a pleasure. A definite favorite among favorites,
and a band that's really good at making me smile.
