Review Summary: “I still refuse to read subtitles, watching s***’s hard enough”

Consisting of light-hearted pop punk, administered in under 9 minutes and dubbed with possibly the greatest band name and accompanying album title combination, Everything’s Coming Up… proves itself to be the embodiment of bite-sized enjoyment.

Right from the beginning the members of Milhouse establish exactly what this EP is all about with the jaunty number ‘TL;DR’. Upbeat guitar chords strummed over punchy drumming introduce listeners to the album, while bassist Dave Drayton proves his worth by laying down some interesting and effective lines himself. Lyrically, the entire album shines. On ‘TL;DR’, vocalist Thomas Elder manages to bring up a worthwhile point in regards to internet abbreviations and the unintelligent manner in which people decide to communicate with each other in the 21st century. Other lyrical highlights include Thomas’s somewhat blunt opinion on the reality of exercise and dieting, taken from ‘Eggs’; “Don’t need a weight loss program, to understand, two words accompanied by obscenity, for dramatic effect: just f***ing move more!” While many of the lyrics have topical relevance, the delivery and word choice remain upbeat and oftentimes humorous. This balance of lyrical honesty and subtle comedy ultimately becomes this EP’s greatest quality.

The instrumentation is generally quite straightforward in its approach; however, its effectiveness cannot be understated. Each element is implemented in just the right way, garnering a solid backbone for the vocals. Vibrant drumming remains an ever-present component of the Milhouse sound as does the well-placed bass playing which completes the rhythm section. Electric guitar chords persist as the dominant force on Everything…, typically comprising of a simplistic style which contributes strongly to the albums laid-back quality and complements the rhythms section perfectly. Everything from the pub-chant that concludes the opening track, to the relatable and funny-because-it’s-true quality to the lyrical approach further reinforces the downright enjoyable atmosphere that pervades Everything’s Coming Up…. in the end, the conglomeration of all of Milhouse’s greatest qualities have culminated into a collection of tracks that, while triggering slight frustration at an insufficiently short run-time, warrant a series of repeated listens to compensate.
