Review Summary: "Reality is the only word in the language that should always be used in quotes"

'Kooler Than Jesus' is a big improvement over the band's hit or miss debut 'I See Good Spirits & I See Bad Spirits'. More of a compilation of sorts than a proper album, it contains two new tracks, "Devil Bunnies" and the title track, while the others are early EPs material.

Musically, this record is a huge achievement for the band: the production is flawless, creating for the first time the atmosphere My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult have as of today and each track is evolving in a different, clear direction, which adds a lot to the fun and the replay value. For example, "Kooler Than Jesus" is a club filler blending EDM beats and funky bass lines with occult-themed sampling (the infamous "I'm the electric messiah/ the AC/DC god!"). It should be noted that this is the real version of the track, not the less exciting one found on next year's 'Confessions Of A Knife'. On the other side, "Devil Bunnies" is a swinging disco tune, that acts as the beginning of the direction the band would later take on. Explicit sexual themes and murder have never been this fun in a long time.

Another highlight is the pill crazed "Nervous Xians" that summarizes what TKK is all about: sex, murder and Satan. Again, a catchy bass line drives the song which is pretty much devoid of significant changes in structure, but it simply works. The rest of the tracks also border on industrial and EDM and while they lack the catchiness later albums (such as 'Sexplosion!' or '13 Above The Night') would have, they are anything but filler. However, 'Kooler Than Jesus' biggest pro is that the arrangements are carefully crafted and through the samples or even simple exclamations, the listener can't help but sink in Thrill Kill Kult's obsession.

Right now, the sound of the music here may seem obsolete; It's normal, with all the new range of beats and synths , but while bands such as Nine Inch Nails or KMFDM were at the beginning or still refining their sounds, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult created this landmark piece that is one of the most significant releases at the genre's peak at the time.

neahh, it's not a bad band at all, just listen to 13 Above The Night (especially Blue Buddha, Badlife), Sexplosion! or The Filthiest Show In Town (which is a more refined version of their 90s sound). Unfortunately if you dig more these murder themes rather than tales of prostitutes and excesses, you can only check the first 2 albums and this one.

I'd pick Sexplosion! as my favourite out of all three but depends what mood i'm in.

Haven't given much else of theirs nearly enough attention.

I agree, these three albums differ a lot. You could check out The Filthiest Show In Town, I've been bitching about it, since not a lot of people have listened to it haha. It's somewhere between Hit & Run Holiday and Sexplosion!
