Review Summary: Deathcore that won't hold the door for you

Here we are in 2015 and after releasing 3 EP's New jersey deathcore band Lorna Shore have finally released their debut full length simply titled "Psalms". Leaving off where their Maleficium EP ended the young Jersey group have returned with a more polished, refined sound that really sets them apart from the majority of deathcore bands around today. Black metal tinged moments, guitar solos, tech death riffs, melodic riffing and even some slams proves there's much more to this band than what their deathcore label would imply. Despite proving that they have more weapons than just "chugs" they are not trying to hide that deathcore identity what so ever and what I mean by that is although there are many outside elements to their sound they still really push those brutal breakdowns to the forefront.

From start to finish this album is absolutely relentless but not reckless. Every blast beat, guitar riff, breakdown and every growl seems meticulously well placed by a very tightly knit group of musicians who don't seem to believe in holding back. Another high point of Psalms are vocalist Tom Barbers unique vocals which to me seem like a blend of Phil Bozeman (Whitechapel) lows and a powerful black metal rasps/shrieks. His lows especially really allow him to shine during the breakdowns and slams which are frequent throughout the album but much more subtle and effective then their previous work and the majority of the deathcore scene in general.

Despite all their strengths Lorna Shore still have a ways to go in becoming a top tier deathcore/modern death metal band. There are riffs here that do sound a bit too similar to one another at times and could make it difficult for some to distinguish between songs. So all in all by the end of Psalms its safe to say Lorna Shore have arrived and it doesn't seem like their leaving anytime soon. As long as they continue to push themselves the future looks very bright for one of the leaders of the new breed in the deathcore scene.

I'm not sure about this one, the high pitched vox sound kinda shitty IMO and the production isn't as good as their last EP.

I'd also like to point out the music video for Grimore is terrible. The vocalist looks like he stapled a wig on the top of his head and the aforementioned high vocals don't fit because you can clearly see he was just mouthing it.

Maleficium owned tho, so I'll give the album another go.

Thanks for the constructive criticism Game I have terrible grammar lol

Its funny many of those mistakes I had correct originally then changed them like I did have eps written as EP's and had the album title in italics too but it looked weird to me and thats past the point anyways

I've heard some people aren't really enjoying the vocals they have changed since Maleficium for sure to me for the better actually.

I REALLY love Maleficium and I'm kinda disappointed that this one doesn't share the same awesome production value.

Maleficium did have excellent production but the production here doesn't really take away from their sound imo
So many great jams here but Grimore, From The Pale Mist and Wretching In Torment are my favourites

i dunno how i feel about this

for one, it has some sweet riffs and it isnt black tongue

however, ive had bowel movements with smoother texture than what's coming out of this vocalist's mouth

the junz dont help much either

good review though
