Review Summary: Local MD hardcore album with two good tracks, two boring instrumentals, four generic tracks, and one singer that needs to be shot.

Arlington Sleeps is a local hardcore band based in Bel Air, MD. This is their debut full length album in addition to two previous EPs entitled "We Are Both But Human" and "Machines." As of right now, they are unsigned.

Most local bands aren't known for their quality of music. If they were, they wouldn't just be local bands for scene kids to drool over. Arlington Sleeps might just be another one of these local bands, but with some fine tuning, a lineup change, a good producer, and some luck, they could very well break out and become famous beyond the Maryland hardcore scene.

"The Whole World Is Sleeping Sound" is a good enough album, but is bogged down by some obvious shortcomings, notably over-simplified song structure, a generic sound, and an absolutely awful clean vocalist. There are highlights though, including an excellent screamer, and one or two excellent songs. While everything on this album is fairly standard for hardcore, the music is enjoyable, though not overly technical or complicated. The instrumentation takes a lot of cues from both Oceana and As Cities Burn. With a little more experience, they could definitely put together a coherent and well structured album in the future.

The song structure is defined by screamed vocals layered over mildly distorted guitars that usually leads to a sung chorus or verse. The closest band I can think to compare them to is Eyes Set To Kill, albeit without a female singer. As mentioned before, the screaming here is top notch, and I can actually testify to this as not being tweaked in the studio either, having seen Arlington Sleeps live, numerous times. But good elements or not, this is something that has been seen a million times over, and then you have the the clean vocalist, who is probably the worst thing about this band. Unbelievably nasally, high-pitched, whiny, and out of tune. Just when you think a good song has gotten underway, he ruins it.

The album wastes no time in trying to be as "brutal" as possible by opening with Butcher, which is actually a decent song. At first. The most noticeable thing is the screaming, which as I said before, is extremely good. About a minute in, the clean singing comes in, and just ruins any semblance of flow the song had going for it. Next up is Machines, which features some interesting guitar, and is actually one of the best songs on here, save for once again, the clean vocals towards the end.

The next track Plague Years is the indisputable highlight of the album. The instrumentation varied, with an interesting intro, and a pleasant acoustic bridge. Plus the fact that there is no shrill singing here makes it worth a listen in and of itself. It ends with a breakdown-esque moment that is pretty cool to listen to.

Unfortunately, after this, underwhelming is the word to describe every remaining track. A useless interlude is followed by Royal Breather, which might as well just have been stolen from Oceana's catalogue. (The catalogue with terrible songs that should never have seen the light of day.) The next track, Kingdom could have been a highlight if it weren't material that seems to be rehashed from... every other hardcore band, really. North is another useless instrumental interlude that showcases the guitarists ability to play one chord over and over and have someone else pick notes with reverb on over top of it. Album closer Atlas can be described the same as the last three songs: completely generic.

As a whole, this album isn't worth a buy. Maybe download it and listen to it for a taste of MD's local music, and see what might become a big band (they have a ridiculous following of scene kids here to promote them) in the future. Beyond that, you'll most likely just forget you ever heard this.

It was hard to find justification to give this a 2 beyond the fact that I like two songs on here...
plus their guitarist isnt exactly a pleasant person. Went to school with him.

"The song structure is defined by screamed vocals layered over mildly distorted guitars that usually leads to a sung chorus or verse."

Most other bands you've gushed over have the exact same formula.

As in the average Rise records band.

1. I will not message you, because I know you, you know me. I will not create useless animosity. I
can choose to voice my opinions on you and your band's music music, and feel no obligation to
validate myself to you. Saying you were a douche was out of line, and i do apologize and have
edited.

2. You came onto this site, making an account, and going through the process to set it up, just to
make a comment, leave a negative rating on a review simply because it isn't in favor of your band,
and then rate it a 5 which it does not deserve. This does not shine a favorable light on you as a
person nor a dignified musician.

3. Not everything i stated in this review was negative. If you look again, i actually commended the
band's musical ability as a whole and your lead vocalist in particular. I did however point out and
discuss the flaws i felt were present on this album, namely the clean vocals, and the fact that this
could essentially be an Oceana B-Sides compilation. Is that a bad thing? Not necessarily. But in
today's music scene, I personally feel that to be truly praised, a band must reinvent the wheel, not
jump on the bandwagon that the wheel is rolling along.

If you do wish to talk to me, leave a response here and I will get back to you, but I will not make
this something personal.

I wasn't planning on making a conflict, but more of a thank you for successfully reviewing our CD, as I do believe it was a not a good of a CD and agree 100% with your review, meaning I mistook the rating option as a 5 meaning the review was a good review not the album review, which i just changed it to what my review the album to be.

I honestly have no idea who you are, and fell you might have mistaken me for our old guitarist who just left because we choose not to tour due to money issues.

I am not in anyway mad at what your opinion was because it is your opinion, and honestly I wasn't very happy with the way it turned out. I was only trying to thank you for the review and talk more about what you thought and understand.

I'm just wondering how I know you?

I have a feeling the reviewer is young and biased. I have more than just a feeling that he has no idea how to write a comprehensive review. This review does not describe the band's music at all. All it does is draw comparisons to other bands and dubs it "just like any hardcore band." Fortunately, I can clarify to readers that this is NOT "generic hardcore." They fall under a post-genre stemming from hardcore but extremely different in sound. This is not "just like" tough guy hardcore Madball or Blood For Blood. This is not scenester hardcore like Comeback Kid or Stretch Armstrong. This isn't metalcore like It Dies Today-- are you starting to catch on? This isn't run of the mill hardcore. The reviewer is extremely sheltered from real hardcore and honestly makes a fool of himself.

I personally don't care for the EP. It's empty. There's nothing driving the music, no lead guitars moving it along, or concrete vocal structure that make the songs feel "whole." To me, it sounds like atmospheric music that just is in the background. It is dark, slower, and while the vocals may lead you to assuming it his high in energy, generally lags for me. Don't get me wrong, I don't like too much structure in my music. I don't need choruses, verses, repetition, etc. But this is still not my type of music. While I agree with the comparisons drawn, with the addition of The Chariot, I will say, that maybe you scene kids reviewing albums like this THINK the bands named are known among all listeners, they are not. Why make it a given that a reader knows these bands? That is a poor assumption, writer. Also, keep in mind I don't care for those bands either. So, me not caring for Arlington Sleeps is expected.

They've definitely matured in sound with this release. There aren't forced sing alongs, blunt breakdowns, and all the things that make you kiddies drool. The drumming is pretty impressive-- lots of cool fills and standing out here. You can tell this band really keeps every player in mind, no one steals the show. The guitarist does not hog the attention and really just sits back and strings notes and scale patterns together as, like I side before, background noise. The lead vocalist that screams, as the reviewer said is good. However, he failed to mention what the guy ACTUALLY sounds like. This guy has some vocal presence! It sounds like he came from a blasting metal band more-so than this style of play. He is in your face, deep, and controlled. It is in no way a screamo sound like most of these bands nowadays. It is deep in pitch, he doesn't do any high screams. The singer isn't my thing, but to me, he doesn't stand out as bad compared to other sceney singers.

You contradicted yourself so many times I dont feel the need to counter your points with any comment.

Though it doesn't matter, this shit-storm of a band is no longer together from what i hear.

Contradicted myself so many times that you won't even bother a response? Sure. I'm not the one writing a review here, I just stream of consciousness immediately responded to this.

And to Mike the guitarist, it really doesn't make you look "cool" to demoralize yourself and something you once took pride in. I'm sure when you guys were laying this down you weren't like "Yeah, on a scale to 5, it's about a 1.5." You agree 100% with this review? I don't even know if I'd be able to understand your rationalization.

That wasnt even meant as an insult. This band is COMPLETELY unnecessary in that they are generic, boring, and plain bad. They also waste half hours of my life at a time by weaseling their way into playing local shows i go to expecting to see good bands.
