| 4.5 superb | MonotoneMop | September 25th 13 | The Spinning Top sees Graham Coxon proving once again that his only permanent inclination is to avoid stagnation. After two successful ventures into relatively safe pop territory, Coxon shapes The Spinning Top in much the more somber and acoustic mold of previous album Crow Sit On Blood Tree albeit with more complex instrumentation. While the distorted lurching guitars Coxon is known for rear their heads occasionally in tracks such as single "Dead Bees", the restraint of noise gives a beauty to tracks such as the soaring "In The Morning" and the spacey "Tripping Over". In finding a careful balance between complexity and clarity, Coxon may have written his finest work.
