| 3.5 great | HappyNipples | April 18th 20 | I guess they won't reach the level of The Great Cold Distance again but this has some bangers. Lacquer is ramong the best songs they've ever done vocally.

| 3.2 good | Erwann S. EMERITUS | August 3rd 20 | Smooth Katatonia release this one. This time enhanced by tasty electronics and a certain sense of melody, their brand of melancholic and atmospheric alt metal flows, imo, better than on their 2010s releases. Not everything is perfect tho: I've always found their late-career instrumentals to be monochromatic, and some tracks go on longer than needed. Solid record nevertheless.

| 4.0 excellent | ajcollins15 | April 28th 20 | This is just some really solid alternative metal and progressive metal with some gothic elements thrown in and art rock elements also thrown in. One of the classics of the genre on their eleventh record and I am happy to see them come back to form after a bit of doglegging for a while in the 2010s with Dead End Kings and The Fall of Hearts. This project isn?t perfect, it gets bogged down in itself after a while. Some of the tracks also go on a bit longer than they probably needed to be, and the instrumentation can get a bit one-dimensional after a while. Overall, though, it is a very solid release for the long term four-piece Swedish band

| 3.7 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | I don't really consider myself a huge Katatonia fan. I didn't really get into them until Viva Emptiness and after Night is the New Day I found myself losing interest again. That's why City Burials is so surprising. On this album Katatonia brought back some of that energy that had been lacking for a while - there's even a legit guitar solo. City Burials feels like a combination of what made Viva Emptiess through Night is a New Day so compelling combined with the moodier songwriting of their latest releases along with a proggier undercurrent. Very nice.

| 3.5 great | Xenorazr | June 18th 20 | City Burials sees Katatonia return in a way that feels tried-and-true with the occasional surprise. After a fairly catchy first half, things mellow out in a way that's bound to appeal to fans of The Great Cold Distance and Night Is the New Day. There's a bit of everything from the band's modern sound, executed with equal amounts of finesse and restraint. It does feel like this is one of the band's less evolutionary releases, which is offset by the aforementioned reasons, just not enough to avoid instilling the slightest sense of stagnation.

| 3.5 great | Deadwing2112 | May 5th 20 | Originally envisioned as a solo project, Jonas Renske apparently reconsidered and recorded this project with his long time band mates instead. City Burials is quintessential Katatonia and a very fine representation and delivery after thirty years into its career. Not unexpectedly, this is a rather somber lineup of tracks. Yet the veteran band of doom progressive metal channels an energy and dare suggest.... melody into its chorus and interlude structures, escaping its self imposed dirge structures that appear a bit too frequent in past releases. City Burials might not win Katatonia any new fans however should more than appease its loyal ranks.
