Ummagma

Ummagma began as an affair with love and sound in Moscow back in 2003, where members Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon were both living at the time. Ummagma began as an affair with love and sound in Moscow back in 2003, where members Alexx Kretov and Shauna McLarnon were both living at the time. Their relationship developed into a marriage and the Canadian-Ukrainian musical duo we know today as Ummagma. After their initial experiments with collaborative song-writing and recording, they moved to Kiev in 2004 and have lived between Canada and Ukraine since then. Alexx is a proven multi-instrumentalist, talented composer and sound engineer, while Shauna focuses on lyrics, vocals and arrangement. Ummagma recently emerged on the music scene with the 2012 release of two full-length debut albums ("Ummagma" and "Antigravity"). They seemingly number among new indie music ‘darlings’, having found a good following in numerous countries with their delicious mix of dreampop, post-rock, post-punk, ambient/ethereal, shoegaze, space rock and progressive rock. Their musical style is unique, while still invoking associations with numerous groups from the early 4AD period, especially Cocteau Twins, in addition to Sigur Ros, David Sylvian, Blonde Redhead, Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, AIR, Slowdive, Mojave 3, Stars, Stereolab, Arcade Fire, M83, Michael Brook, Robert Fripp, Richard Barbieri, Lush, Chairlift, Asobi Seksu, Exit Music, Arcade Fire, Mercury Rev, Talk Talk, Snow Patrol, Ultravox, Spiritualized, Mazzy Star, James Blake, Violet Indiana and Bowery Electric. Ummagma's 2 debut albums have received a good response and have received press coverage and radio airplay in several dozen countries. Ummagma is currently #6 in the Scottish New Music Charts for September-October and held at #38 for August-September. Ummagma held at #2 in New York’s Indie Darkroom Radio charts throughout August and September and jumped to #1 for October. Ummagma has been in Forkster “Rocks It Out” Top-15 ratings for 15 weeks now and is currently ranked #1. Ummagma also ranked high in the Twitter Music Charts in late August and early September and currently ranks #1 on Reverbnation among Indie Alternative Bands in Ukraine. Ummagma was named Band of the Week on the Indie Bands Blog for September 9-15 and Unsigned Band of the Day on Forkster “Rocks It Out” on September 25. On October 1, Ummagma ranked fourth in the TOP-10 Indie Bands for September 2012, according to the Indie Bands Blog. The band is featured in the November 2012 edition of Rolling Stone Russia.
