The Dillinger Escape Plan is an experimental mathcore band thatintegrates metal, hardcore, free jazz, varyingtimesignatures, andelectronicsamples. They are known for the intensity and tooclose for comfort violence of their liveshows, which have beenknown tofeaturestage-diving and fire-breathing. The band isrumored to choose their music's timesignatures with the aid ofdice, or with the use of somekindofcode, but this ispurelyspeculation. What isn't speculation istheir technicalprowess. The band's name refers to John Dillinger, ainfamousAmericancriminal who madenumerous bankheistsand prison breaks in the 1930's.Even though the name wasspontaneously chosenduringthedissolutionoftheirpreviousband,Arcane, it metaphorically represents the band'sstyle since Mr. Dillinger's solution to everything wasto"shootyourway out."[in-depthbiography]...The Dillinger Escape Plan arose outof the ashes of a mediocre 'Jersey hardcore bandnamedArcaneinthe late 1990's. Arcaneconsisted ofDmitri Minakakis (vocals),Ben Weinman (guitar),Chris Pennie(percussion), Adam Doll(bass),andJeffBrantley (guitar). The group recorded ademo forNow orNever Records under thename 'The Dillinger Escape Plan' andimmediately theblandband Arcane was no more. Before their firstshowsunderthenew name, Brantley left the bandand wasquicklyreplaced by the giftedguitaristJohn Fulton. After recognition(mainly fromthe buzzsurroundingtheir liveshows) and acontractfrom Relapse Records the bandrecorded theUnder theRunningBoard EP and soon afterwards Fulton leftthe bandandwas replaced by former JesuitguitaristBrianBenoit.Shortlybefore the recording of the breakthrough full length,CalculatingInfinity,Adam Doll was paralyzed fromthechestdown in a caraccident and would eventually be replaced withformerStarkweatherbassist Liam Wilson.Thetechnicallyproficientjazzand grindinfluenced full lengthCalculatingInfinity gained theband some serious attention, andarguablyfor thisreason, longstandingotherpersonal reasons the band'svocalist Dmitri Minakakis left the band. Theband allowed for openauditionstoreplace himbypostinginstrumentalversion of one oftheir most famous tracks, 43%Burnt, on their website andallowing anyone to perform their ownvocals forthesong.Theband decided on Baltimore, MDnative Greg Puciato. In themeantime,Sean Ingram ofCoalesce and MikePattonofFaithNoMoredid someguest vocals for the band. Pattoneven worked with the other members whilst recording theIronyIsADeadSceneEP.In 2004, RelapseRecords released theband's first full length album with new singer Greg PuciatoentitledMissMachine.Itturnedout to be a major success but didshowa significant change in Dillinger's sound. Also in 2004whiletouring for their new release,Benoitsuffered nervedamageto his left hand and hasbeen unable to tour with the bandsince.Inlate 2006, founding member Chris Pennie, lefttheband tojoinCoheed andCambria afterDillinger toured withthenew progoutfit that year. To replace Benoit,JeffTuttle(formerlyofHeadsWill Roll and Capture theFlag)joinedthe band. Gil Sharone ofthe avantgarde bandStolenBabiestookover percussion dutiesfor their newestalbum IreWorks, which wasreleased in 2007byRelapseRecords. IreWorks has been metwith mixedreviews asitfeaturedmuch more electronics and less of thechaotic hardcore-infused metalthat the band became famousfor.Currently, it isunknown ifSharone is still a permanent memberof the band. For thetime being, a younglad namedBillyRhymer istakingoverdrum duties for the band'slive shows. In the summer of2009, after Relapse allowed their contract to expire, thebandsignedwith independentlabel Season of Mist.Season of Mistis best known for their array of foreign pure metal bands, butrecently released amajor hitwithlegendaryAmericanprogressive metal outfit Cynic and theirreunion album Traced InAir.Ben Weinman (the band'sonlyremainingfoundingmember) has saidthat the yplan to release anew album early in2010 and it is expected that the band will beback in studio withlong-time producerSteveEvettsin July of 2009.Weinmanhas expressed his desire to have Dillinger's musicappeal to a underground fan base andhassaid thattheirnewmaterial isdark and dreary with heavy thrash metalinfluence. « hide
