The Interrupters are an American ska-punk band formed in Los Angeles in 2011. The group consists of vocalist Aimee Interrupter, previously known as Aimee Allen, and brothers Kevin Bivona on guitar, Justin Bivona on bass and Jesse Bivona on drums. Their sound draws on British 2 Tone ska and the American punk revival of the 1990s, combining danceable rhythms with forceful guitars and melodic choruses.
The members first met while touring in 2009, when Aimee was performing as a solo artist and the Bivonas were playing in another band. Aimee and Kevin began writing together, and their collaboration eventually developed into The Interrupters. Rancid’s Tim Armstrong became a mentor and regular collaborator, producing their self-titled debut, The Interrupters (2014), for Hellcat Records. Recorded largely live in approximately one week, the album established their straightforward approach, with the four members’ performances forming the core of the recordings.
Their second album, Say It Out Loud (2016), continued the partnership with Armstrong. Touring included appearances on the Vans Warped Tour and support slots for Rancid, Bad Religion and Green Day, helping the group reach audiences internationally. Their third album, Fight the Good Fight (2018), brought a commercial breakthrough through She’s Kerosene, which reached number four on Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart. The album was recorded primarily to tape and featured all four members of Rancid on Got Each Other.
The live album Live in Tokyo! followed in 2021. During the pandemic, the band converted their garage into a recording studio and developed their fourth studio album, In the Wild (2022), with Kevin taking over production duties. Its lyrics drew more directly on Aimee’s experiences of abuse, mental health difficulties and recovery. Musically, it expanded their established sound through reggae, doo-wop and more varied instrumentation. Guests included Armstrong, Rhoda Dakar of The Bodysnatchers, The Skints, and Hepcat vocalists Alex Désert and Greg Lee.
On October 8, 2026, The Interrupters released Warrior Spirit, introducing synthesizers and an early ’80s new wave influence alongside their familiar ska rhythms. The track was developed with Armstrong, Jesse Michaels, Travis Barker and Brett Gurewitz, and continued the band’s recurring emphasis on resilience and finding strength through adversity.
Their music centres on offbeat guitar rhythms, brisk punk passages, Aimee’s raspy singing and choruses designed for audience participation. Lyrics frequently address solidarity, personal struggle and resistance, with an emphasis on community and perseverance. Their later recordings broaden this framework while retaining the rhythmic energy and direct songwriting of their early material. « hide |
