Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine is a drone and doom metal project formed in 2001. Its recording lineup brought together vocalist Lee Dorrian of Cathedral and formerly Napalm Death, guitarist Stephen O’Malley of Sunn O))) and Burning Witch, bassist and organist Greg Anderson of Sunn O))) and Goatsnake, and former Iron Monkey drummer Justin Greaves. The name comes from the Earth composition Teeth of Lions Rule the Divine, featured on Earth 2 (1993). The project developed from experimental jams involving O’Malley and Greaves, with Anderson and Dorrian subsequently joining. Anderson described the collaboration as an informal session among friends that produced material worth recording. The instrumental recordings were made at Thumb Studios in Sherwood, England, in 2001, with Dorrian’s vocals added later that year. Billy Anderson handled the final mixing, while organ and additional noise were among the relatively few overdubs. The resulting album, Rampton, was released in 2002 through Southern Lord and Rise Above Records and remains the project’s only studio album. Its title refers to the psychiatric hospital in Nottinghamshire. Running approximately fifty-four minutes, the record contains three tracks: the nearly half-hour He Who Accepts All That Is Offered (Feel Bad Hit of the Winter), a cover of Killdozer’s New Pants and Shirt, and The Smiler. Greaves suggested the cover, which the musicians substantially slowed down and reworked. Their music combines sustained guitar and bass distortion with feedback, extremely slow riffs, forceful drumming and Dorrian’s harsh vocals. Greaves’ improvised percussion gives the extended passages a shifting rhythmic presence, while the arrangements develop through repetition and changes in density. Organ contributes a funeral doom character to The Smiler; Anderson specifically connected that element with the music of Skepticism and Thergothon. « hide
