The quintet signed with NOFX bassist Fat Mike's Fat Wreck Chords label in 1993, and issued theirdebut album, Another Day in Paradise, the following year. The band took an artistic leap forward with the 1996 follow-up Suburban TeenageWasteland Blues, which began to build their following among fans of new- school punk-pop. 1998 saw the release of the Crossroads and Illusions EPand the full-length Twisted by Design, a more progressive work which found Strung Out beginning to mix elements of technique-oriented heavymetal into their instrumental attack. Sadly, after the release of Twisted By Design, bassist and main lyrist Jim Cherry left the band. Shortly after, FatWreck Chords also issued a set of early Strung Out material titled The Skinny Years...Before We Got Fat. The band returned in 2000 with the EP TheElement of Sonic Defiance, a showcase for their new bassist Chris Aiken, and their new, somewhat more experimental style, incorporating a lot moremetal influences than their earlier works. In 2002, the band released the full-length LP An American Paradox, showing yet more of their metalinfluences, whilst still retaining their own unique sound. After recording an acoustic version of the song Velvet Alley for the Punk Goes acoustic comp, the band made their contribution to the Fat Wreck Chords "Live in a Dive" series, with an incredible live album highlighting both their punk roots andcurrent sound. Their current release, Exile In Oblivion is a far darker experience than any previous work, with most songswritten around minor keys, and lyrics leaning towards the darker side of life, without fully embracing it. They remain as one of the greatest and mostunder-rated punk bands of the 90's, and are perhaps all the better for it. « hide
