Melbourne’s OKERA, is a band that has their roots firmly grounded in melodic death metal/doom , though they certainly don't limit themselves to the one genre. The bands first online release “The Black Rain”, a free online three track demo was fondly received locally and internationally with the title track receiving over forty five thousands views online and airplay on Australia’s national radio station, Triple J. “The Black Rain” was describe to have successfully captured the slow, melancholic death-doom sound of Sweden’s early 90’s period. The new album “A Beautiful Dystopia” produced by Mark Kelson of the renowned dark rock outfit ‘The Eternal’ and ‘Alternative 4’, features both re-recorded versions of the three tracks that featured on the demo along with four new songs which have moments that can be described as haunting, elegant and beautiful. Tracks such as ‘I Hope’, which was the first song to be released from the album, have also received airplay on triple J as well as local radio Melbourne local radio 3RRR and a number of international Internet radio programs.Initial impressions and reviews of the album have been more than positive, reaffirming the bands ability to capture the essence of the melodic death/doom metal genre and make it their own. “Okera have taken the best parts of both ends of the whole melodic death/doom spectrum, forging an album that hits all of the right spots” www.metalobsession.net 8.5/10“This band is standing on the shoulders of giants, and any fans of those giants will find plenty to like in Okera's music” www.jorzine.com 9.5/10“I just don’t feel that I have words which can properly describe how incredible this album is”deathmetalbaboon.com 9.5/10“Where most bands kill the music clocking songs in at the Opethian nine-minute mark, the songs here maintain their punch throughout” www.metalpsalter.comOkera was founded by vocalist, guitarist and songwriter Jayme Sexton, guitarist Owen Janusauskas, bassist Chris Bennetto and drummer Elliott Sansom in the later months of 2006. Inspired by work of bands such as early Opeth, Swallow The Sun, Daylight Dies, My Dying Bride and Shape Of Despair. Songs that were written early on in the bands career such as ‘The Black Rain’ and ‘Futility’ were heavily influenced by the dark, down tempo sounds of death and funeral doom. However, over time, the songwriting has leant more towards melodic death with the newer tracks having a more upbeat feel, while still capturing the bleak and haunting sounds of the death/doom genre. « hide
