METAFIVE was a Japanese supergroup consisting of Yukihiro Takahashi (Yellow Magic Orchestra), Keigo Oyamada (Cornelius, Flipper's Guitar), Yoshinori Sunahara (Denki Groove), Towa Tei, Tomohiko Gondo (anonymass, pupa) and Leo Imai. Takahashi originally recruited the other five members of the band as backing musicians for his live performances in 2014, for which they were billed as "Yukihiro Takahashi & METAFIVE". Under this name, they released the live album Techno Recital as well as the single "Split Spirit" which was used in the anime series Ghost in the Shell: Arise. In 2015, they announced that they would continue under the name "METAFIVE", and in the following year, they released a slew of material including a self-titled studio album, the live Blu-ray/CD METALIVE, and an EP entitled METAHALF. Despite their prolific output in 2016, the band was not publicly active again until 2020, when they released the digital single "Environmental". In 2021, METAFIVE announced that they would release their sophomore album METAATEM on August 11 and headline the Fuji Rock Festival; they also released the digital single "The Paramedics" from the new album. However, the album release was cancelled just two weeks before its scheduled release date following widespread public backlash against Oyamada's alleged history of schoolyard bullying. METAFIVE proceeded to perform at Fuji Rock Festival 2021 with an alternate lineup consisting of Imai, Sunahara, Seiichi Nagai of Soutaisei Riron and Kenichi Shirane of Great 3. In 2022, this lineup formed a new band named TESTSET, with their live shows consisting of a mix of METAFIVE songs and original TESTSET songs. At the end of 2021, copies of METAATEM were shipped exclusively to people who bought tickets for METAFIVE's "METALIVE 2021" concert video stream. METAATEM later received a wide release on 14 September 2022, and it was announced that it would be METAFIVE's final album. « hide
