John Frusciante

John Anthony Frusciante (born March 5, 1970) is the seminal guitarist of Red Hot Chili Pepper's fame. Ranging beautiful guitarmelodies, cool funk,hard-hitting riffs, and the occasional perfect guitar solo, John Frusciante is one of the most widely-appealing guitarists of modern music. Hisrecent emotional and experimental work (Automatic Writing, Shadows Collide withPeople) has won critical acclaim as a solo artist, butpushing back into his past reveals a completely different guitar hero(1989's Mother's Milk with the Peppers, he even refuses to play materialfrom this album because of the way he played). Though his solo work has yet to drift into the mainstream, his passion for music (particularly after his 'rebirth' from drugaddiction) has allowedhim to release a menagerie of solo material for your get your teeth into, including a 'six albums in sixmonths' stint in 2004 (From The Will toDeath to Curtains). John Frusciante continues to impress and influenceguitarists every year and remains one of the world's best liveguitarists. He joined the Peppers in 1988 after their original guitarist Hillel Slovak died of a heroin overdose. John was a big fan of theband since he was 15and was very excited to play with them. However, by 1992, after the massive success ofBloodSugarSexMagik, John was becoming increasinglyuncomfortable with the fame (despite wanted to be a stereotypicalrock star earlier on), and tensions between him the band rose quickly. He leftin May of 1992, refusing to play a show inJapan. He was convinced to play, however, but then left, telling the Chilis' manager to issue a statementsaying he had "goneinsane". John's heroin habits had been rising for some time at this point. Bassist Flea still jammed with him after hisdeparture, but the effect of his heroin addiction had grown, and he was losing enthusiasm in music. By 1994 he had become a full blown addict, appearing as an erratic, unhealthly looking man with a shot voice. A sprawling,"madman" labeled soloalbum called Niadra LaDes and Usually Just A T-Shirt was also released that year, spreadingrumours of downfall. The situation grew worseyears later, having overdosed in 1996, and quickly going back to drugs aftertrying to get clean. He was at one point living in hotels for not payingrent, and wore clothes covered in blood. Another soloalbum was released in 1997, but was pulled off the shelve because John said it was madefor drug money (at one point hereportedly owed $30 000 to a drug dealer.) During Frusciante's time out of the Peppers, the rest of the boys recruited Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction to play guitar. They released onealbum, One Hot Minute to mixed reviews. The Peppers were criticized for mixing awkwardly withNavarro's primarily metal style of playing.Frusciante claims to never have heard the album. Navarro left the band in 1998, withthe band's chemistry failing, and Navarro's scheduleconstantly excluding the Chilis. John finally got clean in 1998, and rejoined the Red Hot Chili Peppers with a re-energized creativity and love for life. ThePeppers releasedCalifornication in 1999 to massive commercial and critical success. His latest release with the Peppers is2006's double-album Stadium Arcadium. The album is noted for John's experiments with tone and texture. In 2009, however,John announced he was leaving the band, taking more time tofocus on his solo career. His latest album, released last year, isThe Empyrean, on which Frusciante once again fortified his position as one ofthe most innovate and enduring guitaristsof his generation. « hide
