Ben Cook began his musical journey in Toronto’s hardcore scene during the early 2000s as a member of No Warning and later as a guitarist for the acclaimed punk outfit Fucked Up, alongside fronting the punky power pop band Marvelous Darlings. In 2008, he launched his solo project, originally performing as Young Governor with a raw, lo-fi garage rock sound before gradually steering his output toward more melodic and diverse territory. Operating as Young Guv, Cook spent the 2010s exploring various sonic textures - ranging from synth-pop and '80s R&B to smooth soft rock - culminating in the breezy, hook-laden power pop of his 2015 release, Ripe 4 Luv.
After finding himself stranded in New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic, Cook channeled the isolation into a prolific songwriting period that resulted in the acclaimed companion records GUV III and GUV IV in 2022, which showcased his mastery of jangle pop, country-psych, and AM radio soft ballads. Shortening the project's name simply to GUV, he further expanded his musical palette on the 2026 album Warmer Than Gold, pivoting toward the kaleidoscopic, dance-inflected sounds of early '90s U.K. pop, shoegaze, and Madchester. « hide |
