Daniel Pemberton (born November 3, 1977) is an English composer and songwriter whose work spans film, television, video games, and electronic music. Known for resisting a fixed musical identity, he regularly combines orchestral writing with electronics, jazz, rock, hip-hop, unusual instrumentation, and heavily manipulated sound. Pemberton began recording music at an unusually young age. At sixteen, he created the electronic album Bedroom using a multitrack cassette recorder. Released in 1994 through Pete Namlook’s Fax label, the record helped secure his first television commission while he was still a teenager. He subsequently spent more than a decade composing for British television, contributing music to programmes such as Peep Show, Occupation, Desperate Romantics, Upstairs Downstairs, and Dirk Gently. He also became familiar to video-game audiences through his work on The Movies, LittleBigPlanet, and LittleBigPlanet 2. His transition into feature films gathered momentum with the supernatural drama The Awakening in 2011. The score attracted the attention of director Ridley Scott, who recruited Pemberton for The Counselor two years later. A succession of increasingly prominent projects followed, including The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Steve Jobs, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, Molly’s Game, Ocean’s Eight, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. These scores established Pemberton as a particularly adaptable composer: the stylish period textures of The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the collision of electronics and orchestration in Steve Jobs, the raw percussion of King Arthur, and the restless, genre-blurring sound of the Spider-Verse films all emerged from markedly different musical approaches. Pemberton’s later credits include Motherless Brooklyn, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Enola Holmes, Being the Ricardos, The Bad Guys, Ferrari, Materialists, Eddington, Project Hail Mary, and The Drama. His television work has continued through productions such as Black Mirror, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and Slow Horses. For the latter, he co-wrote the title song “Strange Game” with Mick Jagger. Alongside his scores, Pemberton has collaborated with artists including Iggy Pop, Celeste, and Mick Jagger. “Hear My Voice,” written with Celeste for The Trial of the Chicago 7, earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. He has also received Emmy, BAFTA, Golden Globe, Ivor Novello, and World Soundtrack Award recognition. Across his varied body of work, his defining characteristic remains an eagerness to rebuild his musical vocabulary around the individual world of each project. « hide
