Chris Whitley was born in Houston on 31 August 1960. A restless spirit, he busked in New York in the early 80's, before moving to Belgium for
six years. There he tried his hand at various rock styles, before returning to his interpretation of blues and folk. His debut 'Living with the law'
generated buzz, but he was unable to break through to a mainstream audience, possibly because of the abrupt about turn of his sound on his
second album (a psychedelic, acidic ode to his rock influences). Master of the national guitar and an expressive, instinctual singer, he continued
to produce albums in Europe after his career stalled. He passed away from lung cancer on 20 November 2005. His daughter Trixie continues to
make music with the same strange alchemy.
