Brewer and Shipley

Brewer & Shipley is a folk rock duo consisting of Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley. They met in the late sixties in Los Angeles and recorded their first album "Down In L.A." in 1968. Brewer & Shipley is a folk rock duo consisting of Michael Brewer and Tom Shipley. They met in the late sixties in Los Angeles and recorded their first album "Down In L.A." in 1968. Mike Brewer already had a reputation in the L.A. music scene, playing with several other musicians from 1966 with some success. He'd opened on shows for Buffalo Springfield and the Byrds so when the time came for Brewer & Shipley's first proper release it was received quite well. The follow up abum "Weeds" was recorded in 1969. Even though friends and musicians alike were living in L.A. where the music scene was blooming like never before, Brewer and Shipley decided to move to Kansas City, Missouri, playing mainly in small college towns. A regular gig in the town of Tarkio, Missouri supplied them with the name for their next album and biggest commercial success, "Tarkio" (1970). Single "One Toke Over The Line" got to number 10 in the charts in 1971. "Tarkio Road" from the same album was also on the charts in 1971 for 8 weeks. They continued to perform and record throughout the seventies. Brewer &Shipley regrouped in the late eighties after the release of a greatest hits album and started work on new songs leading to the release of three more albums in the nineties. They have always stayed in Missouri and continue to perform together part time to this day. « hide
