Contention still circles the current status of Alastis with a long period of apparent inactivity beginning after their final release, Unity, in 2001. As one of the few groups who can safely be categorised within both dark and black metal, the band saw moderate success across its five full length releases, three of which fall under the Century Media label. As one of the few groups who can safely be categorised within both dark and black metal, the band saw moderate success across its five full length releases, three of which fall under the Century Media label. Their history starts during the late 1980s, where the influx of new founded Norwegian black metal acts spilled over into the nearby Swiss countryside, also inducing the rise of fellow band Samael. Formerly named Fourth Reich, Alastis were the first group to have a major release for the underground black metal label Head Not Found, and one of the first to utilise the now commonly accepted use of crude symbolic pseudonyms for its band members.
