13 Engines were a Canadian alt-rock band that released five studio albums between 1985-1997. Before Our Time (1987) and Byram Lake Blues (1989) were
released independently before the band signed to EMI in Canada and SBK Records in the US. Their breakthrough album, Perpetual Motion Machine (1993)
gave the band mainstream attention and established their sound as a unique, brooding atmospheric mix of indie, grunge and pop-rock. Their highly
anticipated follow up album, Conquistador (1995) was a commercial flop, which prompted two disenchanted members to walk out on the band. Frontman
John Critchley briefly tried to carry on under the 13 Engines name but the band never released any new material after Conquistador.
