Jemma Griffiths, better known as Jem is known for her unique sound and clever approach to vocal performance and mixing of Electronica, Trip-hop and the occasional New Wave element popped in there. Her 2004 debut album Finally Woken proved to be a success in terms of recognition for its distinctive sonorities in both vocal offerings and song structure. Jem, like many others, had humble beginnings. She was born on June 8th 1975 in the small town of Penarth, Wales, close to the well known settlement, Cardiff. Growing up in the close nit community seemed to be quite the appropriate place to discover the ins and outs of life, as well as discover the pathway of a career in music after not having the desired success in the career in law. She had been writing music since thirteen, though never gave much attention towards it until later on when she began collaborating with more illustrious individuals such as Guy Sigsworth (Imogen Heap, Bjork and others), which eventually turned into a record deal with Dave Matthews’ ATO record label, after the song “Finally Woken” made it to the top of Los Angeles radio station KCRW. However, major success it seems usually relies on the North American market to provide some sort of appropriate uptake. Thankfully for Jem, a few of her tracks from Finally Woken managed to nestle themselves on a few prestigious American primetime dramas. The O.C. took on “Just a Ride” and “Maybe I’m Amazed”, while Grey’s Anatomy picked out four others including the hit single “They”. As mentioned, the album Finally Woken did well in her homeland. Four years on she has released the follow up her debut, titled Down to Earth, which showed a seminal style to that of her opening album, but slightly more crafted, an a little more sexier. It shared with the audience a trio of immediate singles including “Crazy”, “It’s Amazing”, and “I Always Knew”, all of which are proving to be a success for the still fairly young singer. « hide
