Created to mark a fresh start following the breakup of Happy Mondays, the initial lineup featured rappers Paul "Kermit" Leveridge and Carl "Psycho" McCarthy, drummer Ged Lynch, guitarist Wags, and Oli "Dirtycash" Dillon on ocarina. The band released their debut album, It's Great When You're Straight...Yeah, in 1995 and their second album, Stupid Stupid Stupid, a year later, but internal tensions led to Ryder firing the rest of the band during a 1998 tour, causing the group to split.
Following brief reunions, the band formally regrouped in 2015 for a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album. They subsequently released the albums Pop Voodoo in 2017 and Orange Head in 2024. Black Grape is widely recognized for blending Madchester groove, hip-hop beats, and sharp, satirical lyricism. « hide |
