Led by sexually ambiguous vocalist Antony Hegarty, Antony and the Johnsons are an odd amalgamate of avant-garde sensibilities cloaked in palpable chamber pop. While Antony's voice may turn some listeners off and his gender-confused lyrics may be disquieting to some, he has received much critical praise (including winning Britain's prestigious 2005 Mercury Music Prize, awarded to the best new band of the year) and has attracted a cult following that is sure to only grow in size and fervor in the coming years. The band returned in 2023 and changed their name to ANOHNI and The Johnsons, and released their first album in 13 years “My Back Was a Bridge For You To Cross” on July 7, 2023. « hide |
