"They didn't coin it but they sure made "True Till Death" the classic straight edge slogan. This iswhere the legend started.Widely reknowned for their intense live show and presence, Chain OfStrength remains one the most imitated and notoriousbands of the late 80's."- Taken From Revelation Record Band page Coming from California, Chain of Strength (CoS) were a band that formed during the late 80's withmembers havingbackground and implication in diverse underground hardcore-punk scene, notablythe fierce but always respectful andthoughtful frontman Curt Canales, who was the signer forPonoma's Trash-Punk outfit Malicious Intent. CoS was a cleanerand more focus departure fromCurt's former band but it retain all the aggressiveness and emotional outburst needed to beasuccessful, albeit somewhat controversial, punk-hardcore band. While CoS were linked and oftenrefer to YouthcrewStraight-Edge movement, Curt and other band members were more inclined toadopting a liberal and non-restrictive point ofview on the lifestyle centered around self-respect forthe mind and the body rather than a strict "toxin" exclusive set ofrules. While that stance hasdrawn some criticisms from the movement purist, it has never really affected CoS messagethatprone living a life axed toward reaching positive goals while dealing with regret and other sociallyaltering event for thegood of your own person and social life. While some have put in doubt theirideologies and integrity after their break-up(see this great interview for more detailshttp://naudforananswer.blogspot.com/2007/03/chain-of-strength.html) , themusical sincerity ofCoS has never been questioned. The whole musical architecture is build around classic punkandhardcore guideline while adding a powerful emotional element to their roots rarely seen in the othergenre builder at thattime such as Youth of Today, Sick of it all or Minor Threat. The result was arefreshing, driven simple sound that evokeeverything that playing and experiencing punk rockshould be: playing something that you believe in and having fun doing itwhile making sure itreaches the listener (And make sure they go nuts during live performance, which were of alegendaryintensity). In this way of thinking, CoS were a perfect punk band. While their existence was shortlived (they brokeup about 3 and a half year after starting), Chain of Strength has left a mark andlegacy few bands in one of the mostextreme sub-genre of punk rock could ever dreamed of. Just seemore modern acts like Ex-Seattle's Champion if youneed any proof. « hide
