His mother was Polish and his father was aFrenchimmigrant to Poland. Arenownedchild-prodigy pianist and composer, he grew up in Warsaw and completed hismusicaleducation there. Following the Russian suppression of thePolishNovember 1830 Uprising, he settled in Paris as part oftheGreat Emigration, and never returned to his homeland. During the remaining 19 years ofhislife, he gave only about 30publicperformances, preferring the more intimate atmosphere of the salon; he supported himself financially bysalesofhiscompositions and as a piano teacher. From 1837 to 1847 he carried on a relationship with the French writer AmantineDupin,BaronessDudevant, who wrote under the male pseudonym George Sand. For most of his life, Chopin suffered frompoorhealth; he died in Paris in 1849 at the ageof 39.The vast majority of Chopin's works are for solo piano, though he also wrote two piano concertos, a few chamber piecesandsome songs to Polishtexts. His piano writing is often technically demanding, with an emphasis on nuance andexpressivedepth. Chopin invented the instrumental ballade andmademajor innovations to the piano sonata, mazurka, waltz, nocturne, polonaise, étude, impromptu, scherzo and prélude. « hide
