Kirk Lee Hammett (born November 18, 1962 in San Francisco, California) is an American musician renowned for his work with heavy metal band Metallica. In 1979, at only sixteen, Hammett founded and named the band Exodus, which would become quite notable in the emerging genre of thrash metal and the San Francisco Bay Area scene in particular. Hammett played lead guitar on Exodus' 1982 demo, but left the band in early 1983 in order to join Metallica as a replacement for Dave Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth). Ever since, Hammett has been the lead guitarist for Metallica as well as one of the band's songwriters. In 2003, Hammett was ranked 11th on Rolling Stone's list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time.
