John Butler Trio

John Butler Trio is an Australian alternative rock/jam rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler, JBT's only constant member. Butler started out as a busker in Fremantle, Western Australia, and released a self-recorded cassette, entitled Searching for Heritage, in 1996. Butler met percussionist Jason McGann and bassist Gavin Shoesmith in early 1998, and later on in December, independently released JBT's debut album, simply titled John Butler. JBT released a four-track EP in April 2000, and a track called Pickapart gained a lot of radio airplay, earning John Butler and his band some growing recognition. John Butler Trio's performance in Byron Bay's East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival later that year contributed to JBT's increasing popularity. In April 2001 JBT released its second studio album Three. Opening track Betterman received huge radio airplay in Triple J. Three remained on Australia's alternative rock charts for nine months, eventually reaching no. 3, and it won an award for "Best Independent Release Of 2001". Some time after, Gavin Shoesmith left JBT to form his own band. He was replaced by Rory Quirk, but he didn't stay in JBT for long, and he ended up being replaced by Andrew Fry. Three's success led to its release in US in 2002, and JBT earned a spot at Bonnaroo Music Festival. JBT developed a great live reputation in Australia. In late 2003, John Butler entered Woodstock Studios in Melbourne to record JBT's 3rd album Sunrise Over Sea. Jason McGann had left John Butler's band earlier in 2003, and he was replaced by Butler's brother-in-law, Nicky Bomba. Butler's bass player for Sunrise Over Sea was Shannon Birchall. Sunrise Over Sea was a massive success in JBT's native country Australia, earning Gold status in only one week and staying in no.1 for months. After some period of touring, Bomba left JBT and he was replaced by Michael Barker, who had made some guest appearences in Sunrise Over Sea. For JBT's 4th studio album, John Butler announced Barker and Birchall would no longer be a part of JBT. Instead, they'd replaced by Nicky Bomba and Byron Luiters, respectively. Bomba had previously played in Three. JBT's brand new lineup went on to record April Uprising, which was also a success, as its predecessor was, in Australia. April Uprising contains one of JBT's most successful singles ever, One Way Road. After touring, Bomba left one more time, being replaced by Grant Gerathy, completing JBT's current lineup. John Butler Trio released in February 2014 its latest album Flesh & Blood, which won an award for Best Blues & Roots Album Of 2014. « hide
