Joan of Arc

Tim Kinsella of Chicago's fame and his brother originally had started making music for one of the earliest and most influential emo bands, "Cap'n Jazz". Around 1994, the band had split, Davey Von Bohlen parting his ways in order to go on to make his own emo/punk band "The Promise Ring." On the other end, Tim Kinsella and his recruits decided to form "Red Yellow Blue", which eventually was scrapped to go a completely different musical direction. This would be known as "Joan of Arc." Tim Kinsella of Chicago's fame and his brother originally had started making music for one of the earliest and most influential emo bands, "Cap'n Jazz". This would be known as "Joan of Arc." Known for their odd guitar tuning and Tim's crooning voice, Joan of Arc can be difficult to listen to at times. Varying time measures and the constant use of the studio as an instrument was increased throughout the years in order to distinguish themselves as not an "emo" band.. a title Tim loathed. Tim also is known for his confusing and oblique lyrics. Their third album, entitled "Live In Chicago, 1999" for example.. is not a live album at all. In fact, Tim had mean't in general that they were alive and present at in the year 1999. This album was Joan of Arc's first step at a "difficult" release.. producing mostly all acoustic music with an avant-garde feel to it. The following year Joan of Arc released "The Gap." This was highly regarded as over the top.. consisting of songs melting into each other, purposely added album skips and clattered background music such as plates falling and breaking. Although Joan of Arc had made a statement, many had felt that Joan of Arc had forgotten the idea of an audience. Joan of Arc momentarily split in 2001, as Tim went to form other side projects such as "Friend/Enemy" and "Owls" (an incarnation of Cap'n Jazz.) Tim also released a solo EP entitled "He Danced His Didn't, He Sang His Did." This consisted half new material and half acoustic variations of JoA songs. In 2003, Tim Kinsella began working on new material with Mike and Sam Zurick. Considering all three were a part of Joan of Arc, he decided to continue the name. Two albums were released, one entitled "So Much Staying Alive and Lovelessness," which was a fresh of breath air considering it was a return to an easier listening sound. The other album later released that year was entitled "In Rape Fantasy and Terror Sex We Trust." This album was very different compared to Staying Alive.. in that it had a darker sound and tone to the album. In 2004, Joan of Arc made their 7th release entitled "Joan of Arc, Dick Cheney, Mark Twain." This album could be considered their easiest to listen to, consisting of many different assortments of music ranging from blues to classical. In 2005, Joan of Arc took a year off making a studio release, and in turn made an instrumental compiliation entitled "Guitar Duets." Many members of Joan of Arc and Tim Kinsella's friends drew out of a hat and partnered up together to perform 10 differently styled guitar duets. 2006 brought Joan of Arc's 8th studio album, "Everything, All At Once," a very much return to acoustic melodic rock as well as "The Intelligent Design of Joan of Arc," a collection of b-sides and rarities. All in all Joan of Arc are a love/hate band who continue to challenge the idea of what music really is. « hide
