Fontaines D.C. are an Irish rock band formed in Dublin in 2014. The lineup comprises vocalist Grian Chatten, guitarists Carlos O’Connell and Conor Curley, bassist Conor Deegan III and drummer Tom Coll. The members met while studying at BIMM Dublin and bonded over poetry and literature, interests that became central to their songwriting. Their name references Johnny Fontane, a character in The Godfather, while “D.C.” stands for Dublin City.
After independently releasing singles including Liberty Belle and Hurricane Laughter, the band signed with Partisan Records in 2018. Their debut album, Dogrel, followed in April 2019, combining post-punk and garage rock with observations of Dublin life and Chatten’s recognisable Irish delivery. The record received a Mercury Prize nomination, while touring with Shame and IDLES helped establish the band internationally.
Their second album, A Hero’s Death (2020), introduced a more introspective atmosphere and earned a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. Skinty Fia followed in April 2022, exploring Irish identity, cultural change and the distance between the band and their homeland. It became their first number-one album in both Ireland and the United Kingdom. These releases developed their sound beyond the immediacy of the debut, placing greater emphasis on repetition, mood and layered arrangements.
Fontaines D.C. moved to XL Recordings for their fourth album, Romance, released on August 23, 2024. Working with producer James Ford after their earlier collaboration with Dan Carey, they expanded into broader alternative rock territory, incorporating string arrangements, atmospheric guitars and hip-hop-inflected rhythms. Songs such as Starburster and Favourite demonstrated this increasing range. The album reached number two in the UK, and the band won International Group of the Year at the 2025 BRIT Awards.
Their fifth album, Dopamine Chamber, is scheduled for release through XL Recordings on October 16, 2026. Again produced by Ford, it was preceded by the singles Marianne, Tongue and Where Is Gone?, the latter featuring Rosalía.
Across their catalogue, Fontaines D.C. combine prominent bass lines, interlocking guitars and forceful rhythms with lyrics shaped by literature, place, identity and personal relationships. Chatten’s delivery ranges from spoken declamation to increasingly melodic singing, while the band’s arrangements have grown from spare, abrasive rock into more expansive and textured compositions. « hide |
