Uli Jon Roth

For more than five decades, Uli Jon Roth has expanded the language of the electric guitar - not only as a virtuoso, but as a composer, instrument designer, painter and musical philosopher. Uli’s work has never been confined to a single genre or discipline. From the early Scorpions and Electric Sun to symphonic composition, the Sky Guitar, Sky Academy and his continually evolving body of work, each chapter follows the same impulse: to discover new forms of expression and give sound to what lies beyond convention. Born in Düsseldorf on 18 December 1954, Uli grew up in a world shaped by art, literature and imagination. His father, Carl-Joseph Roth, was a journalist and all-round artist who encouraged an early fascination with painting, photography, poetry and storytelling. Uli discovered the electric guitar in 1968 and played his first concert that same year, aged thirteen, as lead guitarist with Blue Infinity. Alongside the impact of The Beatles, Cream and Jimi Hendrix came the discipline of classical guitar and piano, and the influence of Andrés Segovia, Julian Bream, flamenco and the violin. When Michael Schenker left Scorpions for UFO in 1973, the remaining members joined forces with Uli’s band Dawn Road. During the five years that followed, Uli became a principal songwriter and one of the defining guitar voices of the early Scorpions. Fly to the Rainbow, In Trance, Virgin Killer and Taken by Force established an international following. The era culminated in Japan with Tokyo Tapes, now regarded as one of rock music’s landmark live albums. Uli left not from a lack of friendship, but from a need to pursue a broader and more personal musical vision. Electric Sun began as a stripped-down three-piece in the spirit of Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, giving Uli a new degree of artistic freedom. The debut Earthquake introduced a radical mixture of rock, classical form and highly melodic guitar technique. Fire Wind brought a harder edge, while Beyond the Astral Skies expanded the concept into a richly orchestrated world of voices, keyboards and guitar. The 1985 tour took Electric Sun through Europe and North America before Uli withdrew from the machinery of constant touring to search for a deeper musical language. A long period away from the spotlight became one of Uli’s most important creative phases. He developed the Sky Guitar to reach beyond the limits of the conventional electric guitar, extending its tonal range and bringing violin-like expression into a new instrumental language. Large-scale works followed: Sky Concerto, Aquila Suite, Soldiers of Grace, Hiroshima de Profundis and the symphony Europa Ex Favilla. Classical architecture, rock energy and spiritual inquiry increasingly became parts of one artistic whole. Following the death of Monika Dannemann in 1996, Uli began Requiem for an Angel in her memory. In 1998, Joe Satriani invited Uli to join the European G3 tour with Michael Schenker, ending a thirteen-year absence from regular touring. Transcendental Sky Guitar followed, alongside performances with chamber orchestras and a complete interpretation of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. Metamorphosis of the Seasons extended that classical dialogue, while international tours and reunions with Scorpions brought Uli’s early work to new generations. The 2006 Wacken performance — “A Night to Remember” — became one of the era’s defining events. Uli founded Sky Academy in Los Angeles in 2006 to share not only guitar technique, but a wider philosophy of listening, creativity and artistic development. More than sixty seminars have since taken place internationally. Across the same period he collaborated and performed with artists including Billy Corgan, Steve Vai, Steve Morse, Brian May, Jack Bruce, Deep Purple and the Scorpions. Tours, festivals and special concerts carried his work through Europe, the Americas, Japan, Asia and the Middle East, while the Sky Guitar continued to evolve in electric, acoustic and flamenco forms. In recent years, Uli has continued to unite performance, composition, painting, instrument design and philosophical thought into one interconnected body of work. In Search of the Alpha Law brings these strands together in an expansive work of music, imagery, symbolism and ideas. International touring, Sky Academy and renewed attention to the formative Scorpions repertoire remain part of that journey. The 50th-anniversary era of In Trance and Virgin Killer is not presented as nostalgia, but as living music — reimagined by the artist who helped create it. For Uli Jon Roth, every concert and every new work remains part of the same search: a path towards a more complete language of art. « hide
