In early 1973, Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser (then head of the label Cosmic Couriers after having previously led Ohr and Pilz) organised and hosted a number of parties at the sound studio of Dieter Dierks, inviting a number of musicians he had worked with and released on his labels, notably Klaus Schulze, Manuel Gottsching (Ash Ra Tempel), Witthuser and Westrupp as well as Harald Grosskopf and a few other members of the band Wallenstein. LSD was involved, and there were also non-musician guests present such as psychologist Dr. Timothy Leary, writer Sergio Golowin and Walter Wegmuller. The studio recorded day and night in order to capture any jam session spontaneous or not, and musicians were free to explore any ideas they wanted whenever they wanted. Kaiser and Dierks later edited and mixed the resulting tapes and released them in 1974 under the name The Cosmic Jokers, unbeknownst to the musicians involved. Schulze in particular (who was not aware that he was being recorded at the time) was disgruntled and pursued legal action, leading to the dissolving of the record label and the voiding of Kaiser's contracts with the bands. In more recent interviews Gottsching has professed "a positive feeling towards those sessions", considering it a learning experience to have been in a professional studio with friends "without the pressure [of] an average commercial production". « hide
