From 1996-1999, Colin Meloy - now leading The Decemberists - was a part of the alternative/folk/country rock band called Tarkio. Majoring in English, Meloy put a lot of focus on the creative lyrics in a storytelling style.
In 2006, Tarkio's entire discography was released in a 2-disc compilation called Omnibus.
