Sullen

Sullen has its origins on 4/5 of Oblique Rain’s line-up (whose activity ended in 2013, with the depart of Flávio Silva). Sullen has its origins on 4/5 of Oblique Rain’s line-up (whose activity ended in 2013, with the depart of Flávio Silva). The long-term musical partnership between César Teixeira, Marcelo Aires, Guilherme Lapa and André Ribeiro was not over and in early 2013 this new project started to take shape. The search for something musically refreshing, and equally dark and taciturn eventually led to the start of something new, something more ambitious than anything ever done by these musicians. From the start there was a clear intention, a collective focus and direction, Sullen identity was about to be born. While taking the first steps to what would later be the first studio album, “post human“, some gaps needed to get filled – first were vocals, which César Teixeira embraced as the lead singer and frontman. Soon enough, as the songs started to take shape and venturing into new sonic realms, the need for a bigger sound palette made itself evident, and so João Pereira joined on keyboards, bringing sound design elements and all the creative possibilities of synthesizers. The complex multi-layered guitar sections and the need for backing vocals made the band start searching for the final member and Pedro Mendes was the one, since most of the band members had already worked with him on other projects and were well aware of his skills. Pedro brought his creative guitar soloing and powerful riffing. The whole process of composing the debut album, “post human”, was made from a musical principle that would reflect the band perception of the world, of reality, of matter and spirit. The sense of “musical journey” is then the reference link between the songs, covering a diversity of experiences and moods – of tension and revolt, of purge and peace. « hide
