Scars on Broadway

Scars on Broadway (also referred to as Scars or abbreviated as SOB) is a new project of System of a Down guitarist Daron Malakian. The band currently consists of Daron Malakian and fellow System of a Down member John Dolmayan. In December of 2005, Daron said in an interview that he "could release ten solo records tomorrow.". He also said, " I have tons of material laying around. After these albums," (Mezmerize and Hypnotize) "I'm gonna go off to learn how to brain and do something on my own, just like Serj. And no, System of a Down is not breaking up. We're just gonna do like KISS and put out our own solo records." Malakian is currently recording the debut album for a group called Scars on Broadway, led by him. "Ghetto Blaster Rehearsals" was supposedly a leak of new Scars on Broadway material, but in a 2007 letter, Daron announced on his website that these tracks weren't in any way affiliated to Scars on Broadway as it exists today and that the music is from a disbanded project from four years ago (most likely the one that featured the line-up with Casey Chaos). The only confirmed members at this point are Malakian on vocals and guitar with System of a Down member John Dolmayan on drums. For the recording of their debut album, the two will be "accompanied by some great musicians"[1]. Daron has teamed up with Garrett Keetley in the studio to help him with the recording. On what direction his album will take, Malakian states: "It will probably be something electronic mixed in with traditional Armenian and thrash, death, black, and doom metal influences. When, or even if, the music comes out, it will still be structured, just like System of a Down's music is". This electronic idea was demonstrated in all 2005 concerts in which Malakian, instead of merely singing the chorus to the song "Sugar" or "War?", as well as "Old School Hollywood" from Mezmerize, distorted his voice electronically with a Vocoder. Daron, in a recent interview, has said that the sound will be influenced by classic rock such as David Bowie, Brian Eno, Neil Young, and Roxy Music. Malakian has shifted his songwriting away from SOAD's frazzled metal to more song-based work, inspired by Neil Young and David Bowie. "I don't feel we're the mosh-pit band," says Malakian. "That's just where I'm comfortable as a writer right now." Daron Malakian and John Dolmayan have been writing and rehearsing new material and plan to begin writing their debut album. According to a source on blabbermouth.net, Scars on Broadway began recording on September 27, 2007. The album is confirmed to be produced by Malakian and Rick Rubin. According to the Scars on Broadway Website, as of December 6th, 2007, the drum tracks for the album had been finished and the band is moving into the next stage of recording. On January 22, 2008 Scars on Broadway were announced to be performing at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival on April 26, 2008[1]. So far, five song titles have been announced, "Universe", "World Gone Wrong", "3005", "They Say", and a song commonly referred to as "Drugs" (the last one was performed at their first live show. It was a short song played at the beginning of some live System of a Down shows and had never recieved an official title). Daron has also said that fans should expect another Scars album before another System album comes out. On March 14, 2008, Scars launched an advertising contest challenging fans to post the Scars on Broadway countdown banner on the best websites they can find and submit screenshots. The prize is a cymbal signed by John and Daron. The band's website featured a countdown timer, counting down to 15:00 PST of March 28, 2008. Additionally, above the timer, in quotation marks was the phrase "They say it's all about to end". The timer was relative to PST time. When the countdown ended, the song "They Say" was made available on the site. The song is also available for listening on the band's official MySpace page, it is available for free download. "They Say" was also allegedly leaked before it's release by decompiling the flash timer on the Scars website reveling the redirect to the page which is now the default on the website Daron Malakian - vocals, guitar John Dolmayan - drums « hide
