Sally Oldfield is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist born in Dublin in 1947. Her music draws on folk, progressive rock and pop, with Celtic influences and spiritual themes connecting her work to new age music. She is the elder sister of musicians Mike and Terry Oldfield.
Her recording career began in 1968, when she formed the folk duo the Sallyangie with Mike. Their only album, "Children of the Sun", appeared in 1969, featuring predominantly Sally’s compositions alongside her brother’s early guitar work. The partnership was short-lived, although the siblings continued to collaborate: Sally contributed vocals to Mike’s "Tubular Bells" in 1973.
Oldfield released her debut solo album, "Water Bearer", in 1978. Combining Tolkien-inspired songwriting with folk and progressive arrangements, the record featured her on guitar, keyboards and percussion, as well as handling vocals, composition and production. Its single “Mirrors” reached number 19 on the UK Singles Chart in 1979. Further albums followed through Bronze Records, including "Easy" (1979), "Celebration" (1980), "Playing in the Flame" (1981) and "Strange Day in Berlin" (1983).
A more pronounced pop direction emerged with "Femme" (1987), which included “Silver Dagger”, and "Instincts" (1988), featuring “Let It Begin”, a duet with the Moody Blues’ Justin Hayward. Her subsequent catalogue included "Three Rings" (1994), while "Secret Songs" (1996) and "Flaming Star" (2001) incorporated world music influences. In 2018, the deluxe edition of "The Enchanted Way" revisited her catalogue through remastered and reworked recordings.
Layered vocal harmonies and richly arranged instrumental accompaniment are recurring features of Oldfield’s sound, while nature, spirituality and literature provide subjects for her songwriting. Her combination of Celtic folk influences and atmospheric arrangements has prompted comparisons with Enya and Loreena McKennitt, with critics identifying her earlier recordings as a precursor to their approach. Mike Oldfield is another related artist, reflecting both their shared musical history and overlapping folk and progressive interests. « hide |
