Michael Shrieve is an American musician and composer born in San Francisco, California in 1949. He is best known as the original drummer and percussionist of latin rock/psychedelic band Santana, with whom he played between 1969 and 1974 appearing on seven studio albums and a number of live performances. Michael Shrieve is an American musician and composer born in San Francisco, California in 1949. He is best known as the original drummer and percussionist of latin rock/psychedelic band Santana, with whom he played between 1969 and 1974 appearing on seven studio albums and a number of live performances. On August 16, 1969, shortly after Shrieve turned twenty, he played with Santana at Woodstock Festival, being the second youngest musician to perform there. After leaving Santana, Shrieve has pursued numerous collaborations with notable musicians all over the world as well as releasing his own solo material. Most notably he has collaborated with German electronic legend Klaus Schulze, American ambient and electronic composer Steve Roach, Supertramp mastermind Roger Hodgson as well as a plethora of jazz and fusion musicians such as Al Di Meola, Stomu Yamashta, Shawn Lane, Bill Frisell and Jonas Hellborg among others. Shrieve has also been a part of the prog band Automatic Man, the rock band HSAS (Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve) and Stomu Yamashta's supergroup Go.
