Maggie Reilly is a Scottish singer and songwriter whose career spans pop, rock and folk. Born in Glasgow on September 15, 1956, she began her career in the Scottish music scene with Joe Cool, the band that subsequently became Cado Belle. Combining soul, jazz and funk, Cado Belle released a self-titled album in 1976 and an EP the following year. The group also introduced Reilly to keyboardist Stuart MacKillop, who became a longstanding collaborator in her solo career.
Reilly gained international recognition through her partnership with Mike Oldfield, beginning with her appearance on QE2 (1980). She subsequently contributed to Five Miles Out (1982), Crises (1983) and Discovery (1984), providing vocals on songs including “Family Man,” “Moonlight Shadow,” “Foreign Affair” and “To France.” Her involvement also extended to songwriting, with co-writing credits on “Family Man” and “Foreign Affair.” After their principal period of collaboration in the early 1980s, she returned for an appearance on Earth Moving (1989).
Her debut solo album, Echoes (1992), featured “Everytime We Touch,” “Wait” and “Tears in the Rain,” establishing her as a recording artist in her own right. Midnight Sun followed in 1993, with Elena (1996) and Starcrossed (2000) continuing her solo catalogue. “Everytime We Touch,” written with MacKillop and Peter Risavy, later reached another audience when Cascada incorporated its chorus into their 2005 single of the same name.
Reilly’s solo work ranges from melodic pop and pop rock to arrangements drawing on British folk traditions. Rowan (2006) placed her folk interests at the centre, bringing together original compositions and traditional Scottish and English songs. Heaven Sent (2013) combined Celtic influences with pop songwriting and more varied instrumentation, while Starfields followed in 2019. The retrospective Past–Present–Future (2021) revisited material from her years with Cado Belle and Oldfield alongside her solo recordings, presenting newly recorded versions together with new songs.
Alongside her own releases, Reilly has contributed to recordings by artists including Jack Bruce, Mike Batt, Ralph McTell, Runrig and the Sisters of Mercy. These collaborations reflect the range of her recording career, which extends from the soul and funk of her early band work to progressive rock, mainstream pop and folk. « hide |
