George Winston is a composer known to be predominantly influential and involved in the Folk and New Age genres. George Winston is a composer known to be predominantly influential and involved in the Folk and New Age genres. At a firstglance, one may immediately think his style may be reminiscent of classical composition; however they (his compositions)are far from anything remotely classical.His popularity in the New Age genre has been solidified by many citing him as the “father of New Age music”, though heusually rebuts this term for “rural-folk music” – a style created by him in both the term, and music. Additionally, his stageimage allows him to maintain a certain sense of simplicity with his audiences. Rather than choosing to formalise his dress,Winston usually arrives on stage dressed not too dissimilar from a lumberjack.Born in the green landscape of Michigan in 1949, Winston began to play piano at an early age. His music is highly evocativeof his childhood landscapes, seasonal movements, and anything related to nature itself. In a sense, Winston may be just thesame to music as what Robert Frost was to poetry; reflective of nature and its beauty.Even though his music reflects this area, he has cited most of his influences to be within Jazz and early Blues music, and notrelated to anything from the European Classical discipline. One can pick up on these entries even in some of his morecomplex pieces, such as the stride piano technique and alike. His adherence to the syncopated Jazz style has allowed to himdevelop a distinct style of playing, that he also adapts to many arrangements of familiar traditional music, folk songs andeven the 2002 tribute album to the music of The Doors.While he is most famous for his solo piano arrangements and compositions, he also is adept on the harmonica and slack keyguitar, sometimes opting to use a combination of the three in his music. On top of this, he also makes use of eachinstruments own possibilities for experimentation, such as his finger plucking technique on the piano strings. So far, he hasreleased over ten studio albums, all of which have been successes for him. « hide |
