A Brooklyn-based composer of experimental electronic music, Faten Kanaan has developed a unique approach based around creating live loops played manually without the aid of samplers or sequencers. The mysterious and beguiling Afterpoem followed in 2023.
After moving to New York to attend graduate school, Kanaan became enmeshed in the city's experimental music scene. Inspired by classical and medieval music, she also became entranced by film scores, particularly analog synth-based ones, which often used sequencers and arpeggiators to build repeated loops. Unaware of those tools at the time, she learned to play these types of parts live, repeating them by hand, an approach she has carried into her modern compositions and performance style. She is currently one of the best references to post-minimalism and experimental ambient music. « hide |
