Originating from Marple and initially formed in college, Dutch Uncles emerged as part of the post-Oasis Manchester wave alongside peers like Everything Everything and Delphic. Over their career spanning albums from their 2009 self-titled debut to 2023's True Entertainment, the band evolved from a scratchy post-punk outfit into a sophisticated art-pop group.
Their distinctive sound blends angular indie rock with complex art-rock, chamber pop, and minimalist rhythms. Drawing wide-ranging inspiration from post-punk acts like Talking Heads and XTC to classical and progressive influences like Stravinsky, Steve Reich, and King Crimson, their music is defined by intricate time signatures, idiosyncratic vocals, and unconventional instrumentation encompassing strings, brass, and tube percussion.
