Department S

Department S had a classic hit in 1980 with their debut single ‘Is Vic There?’ and quickly followed on their success with singles including ‘I Want’, ‘Going Left-Right’ and their acclaimed album ‘Sub-Stance’, since re-released as a 22-track anthology. Department S had a classic hit in 1980 with their debut single ‘Is Vic There?’ and quickly followed on their success with singles including ‘I Want’, ‘Going Left-Right’ and their acclaimed album ‘Sub-Stance’, since re-released as a 22-track anthology. They toured with bands such as Toots and The Maytals and The Jam. Paul Weller cited lead guitarist, Mike Herbage, as ‘Best New Guitarist’ in 1981. After a hectic couple of years of sell-out tours in the UK and Europe, they dis-banded in 1982 and pursued individual projects while raising families. Sadly, their lead singer and co-songwriter, Vaughn Toulouse, passed away in 1991 but original band members Mike Herbage, Eddie Roxy and Stuart Mizon reformed the band in 2007 and released a rock cover version of Alvin Stardust’s ‘My Coo-Ca-Choo’. Bringing in another original band member, Mark Taylor and joined by former Back to Zero’s Sam Burnett, they played a reunion gig at London’s famous 100 Club in 2010 and never looked back. Swiftly developing a huge following of both old and new fans, they have been playing to packed London venues and UK festivals including Rebellion, Wickerman, Guilfest and Hertals Rock City Festival in Belgium. Current single releases include ‘Wonderful Day’ and ‘God Squad Saviour/Slave’ while ‘Is Vic There?’ got into the top ten iTunes singles chart this summer. Guest appearances on their recent recordings include Mark Bedford (Madness), Marco Perroni (Adam and The Ants), Glen Matlock (Sex Pistols, The Faces) and John Keeble (Spandau Ballet) amongst other legendary rock musicians. Department S released their long-awaited new album Mr Nutley’s Strange Delusionarium (Sartorial Records) on 3rd October 2011, available on CD / digital download. ‘Vive Le Rock’ magazine gave the new album 8/10 stating ‘Not many bands come back from their glory days sounding fresher than they ever did’. Meanwhile, they have a busy autumn/winter schedule with more shows and festival appearances planned for 2012. « hide
