Crypt Sermon are an American heavy metal band formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2013. Their music is rooted in epic doom, combining weighty riffs and ominous atmosphere with melodic vocals, elaborate guitar solos and the driving rhythms of traditional heavy metal. Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus and Trouble were important reference points for their initial direction.
Following Demo MMXIII (2013), the band signed with Dark Descent Records and released their debut album, Out of the Garden, in 2015. Produced by Arthur Rizk, it established their combination of deliberate doom passages, faster galloping sections and prominent lead guitar work. Brooks Wilson initially handled both vocals and bass before Will Mellor assumed the latter role, allowing Wilson to concentrate on singing. Guitarists Steve Jansson and James Lipczynski supplied the debut’s riffs and melodic interplay.
Their second album, The Ruins of Fading Light (2019), continued the partnership with Rizk while expanding the arrangements and lyrical scope. Heavy guitar passages appeared alongside acoustic interludes, while religious and occult imagery framed reflections on faith, family, mortality and loss. Wilson described the lyrics as a more personal development of the themes established on the debut. He also created the album’s artwork, connecting his visual work with his role as vocalist and lyricist.
Plans to promote the album were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, and subsequent personnel difficulties temporarily interrupted both performances and songwriting. Crypt Sermon eventually returned with The Stygian Rose (2024), recorded by a six-member lineup comprising Wilson, guitarists Jansson and Frank Chin, bassist Matt Knox, keyboardist Tanner Anderson and drummer Enrique Sagarnaga. Rizk again handled production, mixing and mastering. The expanded ensemble brought additional atmospheric detail and a more collaborative writing process to the record.
The Stygian Rose broadened their traditional doom foundations through more varied heavy metal arrangements and an interconnected lyrical setting. Its central character pursues a lost love through occult practices, with the story informing both the lyrics and Wilson’s accompanying illustrations. The eleven-minute title track develops toward a crescendo, bringing the album’s musical and thematic journey to its conclusion.
The EP Saturnian Appendices followed in 2025. It collected Only Ash and Dust and A Fool to Believe from the previous album’s recording sessions, the instrumental Lachrymose, and a previously released reinterpretation of Mayhem’s De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas. The new songs further explored the emotional background of the narrator introduced on The Stygian Rose. « hide |
